Residents at Wesley Village in Shelton celebrate Valentine's Day
SHELTON - Residents at Wesley Village senior living communities received special Valentines this year as staff went all out to share the love with heartfelt cards, flowers, and every kind of chocolate treat imaginable.
“This is my first time celebrating Valentine’s Day here and I can’t believe everything that has been done for us,” exclaimed Crosby Commons resident Lee.
“We hand delivered over 400 personalized valentines and flowers to our residents to make sure they knew how much they mean to us,” said Marissa Salvesen, Manager of Mission Development.
Campus wide celebrations included musical entertainment, a traveling cart with hot chocolate and cupcakes, and lots of hugs and kisses all around.
The staff raised funds for the Valentine’s Day flowers and cards through a popular Celebrity Chef series.
Every Wednesday chefs from Wesley Village communities made specialty dishes that employees could purchase for lunch, or take home for dinner.
The Wesley Village Campus is located at 580 Long Hill Ave. It includes: Crosby Commons Independent/Assisted Living Community, Wesley Heights Independent/Assisted Living Community, Lifestyle Transitions Assisted Living/Memory Support Community, and Bishop Wicke Health and Rehabilitation Center.
The campus is owned and operated by UMH, a local, mission-based, not-for-profit organization.

Griffin Hospital offers diabetes workshop at Derby Senior Center
The Live Well Diabetes Self-Management Workshop will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. on Thursdays from Feb. 21 to April 4 at the Derby Senior Center, 239 Main St.
The workshop will focus on several topics for those with diabetes, including what to eat, foot care, low and high blood sugar, sick day guidelines, tips for dealing with stress, and how to set small and achievable goals. It is also open to caregivers.
The program is sponsored by the Connecticut State Department on Aging, Connecticut Department of Public Health and Griffin Hospital Community Outreach and Valley Parish Nursing.

Olde Ripton Garden Club in Shelton to meet at Plumb Memorial Library

SHELTON - The Olde Ripton Garden Club will kick off its 2019 gardening season at its first meeting of the calendar year March 4.
Area gardeners and enthusiasts are asked to consider joining the Club and assist with its mission of beautifying streets, highways and grounds around public buildings in Shelton. The Club provides education and knowledge of horticulture and preservation of the environment.
Area residents can join no matter what level of gardening they are at – from beginner to master gardener!
Projects include working on community gardens around town, holiday decorating at public buildings in Shelton, a garden therapy program with seniors, and youth gardening in Shelton schools. Getting involved with activities of the Club is a good way to get to know neighbors and be active in projects related to gardening, house plants, horticulture classes, trips, landscape design, and programs focusing on pollinators, birds, and conservation.
Meetings include speakers, a light lunch, great conversation and friendly activities.
Interested parties are invited to attend a meeting to see if they want to join.
The first meeting will be held at 10 a.m. March 4 at Plumb Memorial Library Community Room, 65 Wooster St.
A nominal visitor fee of $5 is requested to help defray costs of program, lunch, and refreshments. Annual dues are $35 for those who wish to join.
The Olde Ripton Garden Club is a non-profit organization.
