DERBY - In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital is offering free one-on-one phone calls with cancer specialists March 30 by appointment only from 1-4 p.m.
Participants will talk to one of Griffin’s cancer experts and gain a better understanding of their personal colorectal cancer risk.
The discussion will include trusted information about their personal risk factors, lifestyle changes to help lower their risk, the benefits of early detection, and a personalized timeline for colorectal cancer screenings.
Participants will also be able to make an appointment for a colorectal cancer test during the phone call if needed.
According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and in women in the U.S., and the second most common cause of cancer deaths when men and women are combined.
Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 23 (4.3%) for men and 1 in 25 (4.0%) for women.
Colorectal cancer is estimated to cause about 52,580 deaths this year.
Fortunately, there are screening options, including colonoscopy, that can prevent and detect colorectal cancers at an early and treatable stage.

St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop in Derby asks for donations during Lent
DERBY - Help us [at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop and Food Bank] breathe new life into items you and your family no longer need.
Sales of your donated items in our thrift shop support our FOOD BANK which gave away 19% MORE FOOD THIS JANUARY than last January to people in Derby, Shelton, Ansonia, Seymour, and Oxford!
We accept all clothing - any season, shoes, jewelry, toys, all kitchen items, towels, sheets, bedding, collectables, home decor, books/cds/DVDs, electronics, and any holiday or seasonal items.
Many furniture items also welcome - please call ahead about large pieces. We kindly ask that you only donate items good enough to give to a friend!
Food donations are also welcome when we are open! Hours: Monday thru Saturday 9:30 to 2:30. You may use our blue donation bin for soft bagged items when we are closed.
The shop is at 237 Roosevelt Drive.
