Pond exploration slated at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY - Come and get your hands wet at a pond exploration program at 10 a.m. June 26 with Kellogg Environmental Center staff.  

Nets and pans will be provided along with other equipment. Participants will be able to catch and examine large and small organisms before releasing them back into their natural environment. 

This special hands-on program is for all ages to learn about the diversity of life in a pond environment.  

Families and individuals will meet under the tent at the Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave. to gather equipment before walking to the pond across the street in Osbornedale State Park.  

With the help of staff naturalists, participants will search for animals that make this body of water and its’ wetland special.  

Please dress for mess and understand that there will be mud. Registration is required to participate in this free program.

Ansonia Police take part in annual torch run today for Special Olympics

"The Ansonia PD participated in the annual torch run for Special Olympics today. Over 1,500 Officers are running and passing the "Flame of Hope" to spread the message of inclusion.

Ansonia Farmers' Market features produce, plants, pies, jellies, breads, cheeses

Today my husband Ralph and I attended the season opening of the Farmer's Market in downtown Ansonia. 

Gazy Brothers Farm of Oxford was there as were Beldotti's Bakery of Stamford, and Ansonia's own Amski's Delights - jams, jellies, pies, pie fillings. 

We bought lettuce, golden zucchini, Italian bread, grape jelly, and pepper jam. Looking forward to consuming it all! 

The market on West Main Street across from the train station will be open from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. every Friday through the growing season.

Naturalists at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby to host Insect Safari

DERBY - Take part in an Insect Safari at 10 a.m. July 3 with staff from Kellogg Environmental Center. Meet our naturalists in the parking lot at 500 Hawthorne Ave. 

Learn about habitat, insects, and collection methods. 

Fields are great places to find a variety of insects and other invertebrates.  

Explore the meadow next to the Kellogg Estate and search under trees of the Estate grounds.  Search for caterpillars and eggs that are hidden in the plants, and learn about the food web in the field. 

Participants will be aided in identifying their “catches” prior to releasing them back to the animals’ appropriate habitat. 

Program concludes back at the tent near the Center where participants can use microscopes to get a closer look at some of the items and organisms that were found. Insect safari is suitable for all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Since field habitats are full of sun, please dress appropriately with hats and sunscreen.  

Long pants are best with socks and closed toe shoes to protect feet and legs. Apply insect repellant prior to the start of the program, following directions on the label.

Griffin Health in Derby offers 4-week smoking cessation program

DERBY - Griffin Health offers free education, advice, and support to help individuals prepare to quit smoking with its four-week smoking cessation program starting June 23.

“That’s It – Learn to Quit” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit smoking. 

The program consists of Wednesday night meetings from 5:30-7 p.m. scheduled for June 23 and 30, and July 7, 14, and 21 at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.

“The goal of the program is to help you learn how to quit,” said Richard Le Pera, a co-coordinator of the program. “There are different methods of quitting and managing nicotine withdrawal. If one method didn’t work for you in the past we’ll help you understand all your options.”

Through group discussion and interactive activities, participants learn how to develop a quit plan that addresses their personal behaviors and habits. 

Strategies to manage nicotine withdrawal, behaviors, triggers, and urges are discussed as well as weight control and stress management.

Participants must be prepared to attend all four sessions.

Lovely '54 Lincoln stands out at Seymour Lions Club's Summer Cruise Night

 

Husband Ralph and I attended this week's Seymour Lions Club Summer Cruise at Tri-Town Plaza in Seymour. They run every Thursday from 5-8 p.m. through early fall.

Ralph said he loved this 1954 Lincoln Capri because it's an unrestored original. He also commented on the "magnificent aroma of the blue and white leather seats."
