Crosby Commons in Shelton to host Earth Day-themed open house

SHELTON - Join us for an Earth Day-themed open house at Crosby Commons Independent and Assisted Living Community from 1-3 p.m. April 22. 
Crosby Commons is located on the Wesley Village senior living campus at 580 Long Hill Ave. The award-winning community offers independent and assisted living options along with access to a wide continuum of senior care services on the campus, including specialized assisted living, memory support, short-term rehab, skilled nursing care, outpatient therapy and more.

Egg-citing! Ansonia to host Easter egg hunt at the Armory

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host annual baby fair

Expectant parents, new parents, and their families can get a good feel for the area’s maternity and child care resources from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 29 at Griffin Hospital’s 2017 Annual Baby Fair.

Held at The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., this free event features more than 30 exhibitors, door prizes, tours of the Childbirth Center and information about the Center’s classes and support groups for before and after childbirth.

Griffin Hospital offers family-centered maternity care in an environment to best meet individual and family needs with private, family-friendly rooms, expert staff for maternal and newborn care, and lactation consultants. 

The Childbirth Center received the Baby-Friendly designation from the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. 
This international honor is given to hospitals that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and help parents make informed choices about feeding and caring for their babies.

Take in a movie, create resume at Derby Public Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library continues its weekly Wednesday Movie Matinees series for ages 18 and over.  
Newly released DVDs will be shown at 1 p.m. every Wednesday.

Light snacks will be provided. Registration is requested.

Resume workshops

The Library offers Resume “Right”-ing Workshops on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.  
During these sessions, participants are welcome to either start from scratch or bring copies of their existing resumes, cover letters as well, for review and optimizing.  

Often times a new resume can be created simply by making a number of subtle tweaks versus a whole new change.  

The May class will be held May 3 at 6:30 p.m.

Registration is not required.

Ansonia Nature Center posts May activities for all ages

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, offers a variety of fun activities in May.

NATURE EXPLORERS – Wednesdays, May 3 and 10,  10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Join Wendy for our preschool/toddler program. This 4-week session is for children ages 2–5 years old with an adult. These outdoor classes will be fun exploring and learning through play. We will learn about nature and science through activities such as hiking, exploring, singing, games, reading, and making crafts. Every class is outside!!!! ADVENTURES IN EDIBLE PLANT FORAGING – May 6, 10 a.m.

Karen Monger is the author of the 3 Foragers blog, which she runs with her husband, Robert, and their daughter, Gillian. Come join their family in discovering edible plants and harvesting them together in the park. Their mission is to impart their knowledge of wild edible plants to others. After the walk, try a wild food “sampler” made by the staff of the Nature Center.

CARTOONING THE NATURAL WORLD – May 7 & 21, 10 a.m.

Ranger Amie Ziner, our artist in residence, will teach four classes in cartooning nature! We will use on site materials, stuffed specimens, and live animal observation to complete four cartoons with a plant and animal in each one. Improve your drawing accuracy and realism for fun, for story illustration, and for expressing yourself using pictures—a picture is worth a thousand words! For ages 10 to adult. Limited space. FEE: $5 per class.

SUNDAY GUIDED HIKE: History Hike – May 7, 1 p.m.

Hike to the Nature Center’s historic sites with Ranger Dan. Discover old roads, stone walls, and even some secret treasures he’s found during his exploring. Enjoy the day off with your family on this Sunday hike. FREE.

EARLY MORNING BIRDING –  May 13, 9 a.m.

Join Ranger Jessica for our early morning birding. Find the birds living in or moving through our parklands to nest farther north. This is a prime time for birders to come and spot some of our magnificent migratory birds. Bring your own binoculars or use ours. Dress for walking outdoors. We will start with a quick introduction to birds. FREE.
