Troop 3 of Derby to host shopping bus trip Saturday

DERBY - Troop 3, Boy Scouts of America, will host a pre-holiday shopping bus trip Saturday to Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley, N.Y.

A bus will leave at 7:45 a.m. from the Derby Train Station

Ansonia mayor plans second annual State of City address

Budget surplus announcement expected

ANSONIA - Mayor David S. Cassetti will hold his second annual State of the City address at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Ansonia High School.

All residents, taxpayers, and Ansonia-based business owners are invited and highly encouraged to attend.

The State of the City address provides an opportunity for the mayor and his city department heads to update residents on the progress made in Ansonia over the past year. 

The address will feature presentations from the mayor, Treasurer Judy Larkin Nicolari, Economic Development Director Sheila O’Malley, and Public Works Superintendent Douglas Novak, among others.

“It is my goal to foster an open and transparent city government,” Cassetti said. “The State of the City address offers an opportunity for Ansonia residents to meet their public officials face to face and obtain information in the most direct manner possible.”

This year Cassetti is expected to make several important announcements regarding the financial health of the city. Specifically, it is anticipated that an announcement will be made concerning a budget surplus and growth in the grand list.

“At this time all I will say is that Ansonia’s finances are continuing to improve,“ Cassetti said.

Other featured topics will include economic development. “Ansonia is truly charging forward,” Cassetti said. "I cannot wait to share all the details on Oct. 15."

Derby opens new footbridge at Witek Memorial Park

DERBY – Just in time for the arrival of the fall hiking season, the new footbridge at Witek Memorial Park is officially opened to the public.

The project was the result of successful collaboration among city staff, Derby aldermen, and community business partners including D’Amico Associates, DiGiovanni & Sons Construction, and A Quick Pick Crane and Rigging Service.

The nine-foot by 22-foot wooden bridge will enable hikers to now safely travel over the spillway and around the lower reservoir without having to traverse the steep hill below the dam and enter Academy Hill Road. 

The bridge includes aprons at either end to allow for wheelchair access.

The footbridge is only one of the projects Derby Public Works recently completed at Witek Memorial Park, a 144-acre park on Derby’s east side. 

The park features two reservoirs, several walking and hiking trails, and two soccer fields.

“Because the bridge was built by DPW employees, labor and materials only cost the city about $8,000,” said DPW Director Anthony DeFala. “If we had outsourced the job, it would have probably cost about $50,000,” DeFala said. Additional improvements recently completed at Witek Park include:

• Replacement of the roof on a small accessory building near the spillway

• Installation of new fencing

• Newly landscaped entry way 

• Repairs to the parking lot and drainage system along Academy Hill Road 

• Improvements to the parking area near the soccer fields

• Repairs to the lower spillway in accordance with mandates by state dam inspector

Mayor Anita Dugatto praised the improvements. “The work done at Witek Park was motivated by a concern for public safety and persistent maintenance needs. By doing as much work as possible in-house, we controlled our costs and were able to maximize our investment in this community asset,” she said.

Team from Shelton walks to end Alzheimer's at Norwalk event

Staff, family members, and volunteers of Wesley Village joined together Sunday for the 2015 Walk to End Alzheimer’s (Fairfield County), held at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk.

Proud to be part of the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research, the Wesley Village Team included members from each community on the senior living campus: Crosby Commons Assisted Living Community, Wesley Heights Assisted Living Community, Lifestyle Transitions Memory Care, and Bishop Wicke Health and Rehabilitation Center.  
The campus hosted several fundraising events during the months of August and September to help support the cause, including a “Scoop Night” at Rita’s of Shelton, a “Scoop Day” on the campus, and other employee events. 
The group proudly raised over $1,400 for the Alzheimer’s Association. 

Each community on the Wesley Village campus was represented at the walk and involved in the fundraising, including the campus’s new memory care neighborhood, Lifestyle Transitions. 
Lifestyle Transitions offers specialized assisted living in a secure, supportive environment for those living with memory loss, and also hosts a monthly Alzheimer’s and dementia support group. 
The support group is held on the third Thursday of each month, from 2-3 p.m. and is open to the local community.

Crisco to host 30th annual senior fair in Ansonia

ANSONIA - State Sen. Joseph J. Crisco Jr., D-Woodbridge, will continue his commitment to seniors from the Valley when he hosts the 30th Annual Senior Fair from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Warsaw Park.

Crisco’s annual Senior Fair has become a Valley tradition, attracting hundreds of seniors from around the region to receive free dental care and blood pressure screenings, a massage, nutrition tips, or to meet with dozens of state, local and non-profit vendors offering services to our senior citizens.

The annual Senior Fair was begun in 1987. Warsaw Park is at 119 Pulaski Highway.

The non-political event typically attracts several hundred area residents to get flu shots, play bingo, learn about scams and fraud, apply for drivers’ licenses, manage chronic diseases and meet with state and local agency representatives such as the local police or visiting nurses.
