TEAM needs volunteers for income tax assistance program


TEAM needs YOU!
Volunteers needed NOW through April 2024 to help greet clients and check them into their appointments for our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. 

We help about 1,000 households in our community each year file their taxes for FREE and get the maximum refund.

TEAM to offer free income tax preparation services in Derby, Milford



Who? TEAM’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program prepared more than 1,200 income tax returns last year. 
TEAM is a private, non-profit human services agency serving the Greater Valley region and Milford whose mission is to strengthen our communities by educating, supporting, and empowering individuals and families.

What? TEAM is pleased to announce it will offer FREE tax preparation and filing services to eligible Valley households needing to file their 2019 returns. 
VITA is a financial literacy initiative providing free tax preparation services for individual or family incomes less than $56,000/year. TEAM’s IRS-trained volunteers not only prepare/file basic tax returns – they also educate participants on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), child tax credits, and many other tax-related issues and opportunities. 

When? Available by appointment on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays beginning Jan. 26 and continuing through April 15, 2020. Easy online scheduling: www.211ct.org/taxhelp or call TEAM (203) 736-5420 ext.1206 for more assistance and information. 

Where? TEAM at 30 Elizabeth St., Derby, (Monday noon-4 p.m, Wednesday, 4-8 p.m.- Saturday)
Derby Neck Library at 307 Hawthorne Ave., Derby (Sunday 1-4 p.m.)
Milford Senior Center at 9 Jepson Drive, Milford, (Sunday 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday 5-8 p.m.)

Why? VITA plays a key role to help keep and put money in the pockets of hard-working people who really need it. In the last year alone, TEAM’s VITA program filed 1247 returns in the Greater Valley region at no cost – results of these returns included $1.8 million in refunds, more than $560,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), and more than $221,000 in Child Tax Credits and Education Tax Credits.

Derby Neck Library to host movies, history lecture, more


DERBY - The Derby Neck Library begins its second year of watching streaming features at “Tuesday Afternoon Tea-V” at 1 p.m. Jan. 8. 
To start the year the fare is Mystery Matinee—featuring Agatha Christie’s famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, portrayed by distinguished actor David Suchet.  
Following each film is a discussion session. Free tea and biscuits are served throughout the showing.  
This is a free event; no registration is required. 

Valley Labor History
At 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 the Library presents a powerpoint program on “Valley Labor History.”  
Researched and narrated by Patricia Sweeney, Ph.D., this lecture focuses on the most intense, dramatic events circa 1915-1919, when the lower Naugatuck Valley had a high rate of labor disruption and attracted notice from prominent labor leaders. 
Manufacturing companies discussed include Farrel of Ansonia and Blumenthal of Shelton, among others.  
This is a free event; no registration is required.  

Teen Movie Choice
The Library hosts Teen Movie Choice at 2 p.m. Jan. 19.  
All teens and tweens are invited to a free film with movie refreshments provided, including pizza. 
Attendees get to vote on the feature to be screened from a select list of recent releases and proven classics. Registration is required, as seating is limited to 20 people.  

Women's Forum
On Jan. 21 at 12:30 p.m., the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a literary discussion group.  This month’s focus is on two short stories involving strange events:“All But Empty” by Graham Greene and “How It Happened” by Arthur Conan Doyle.  
Copies of the stories are available free prior to the meeting. Feel free to bring a light lunch; we serve coffee and tea.  

VITA volunteers
On Jan. 27 from 1-4 p.m., the Library opens its Community Room for use by VITA volunteer tax preparers.  
Participants must call TEAM in Derby, 203-736-5420 for information and to schedule an appointment.  
Throughout tax season, the VITA group will be at the library on Sunday afternoons.

Evening Book Club
The Library hosts the Evening Book Club at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28. 
This month’s selection is “The Inheritance,” a novella by Louisa May Alcott.  
Copies of the book are available at the library prior to the meeting.  
Join us for an informative and stimulating talk moderated by Patricia Sweeney, Ph.D.

DERBY - TEAM, Inc., is seeking volunteers to assist low-income families and individuals in filing their taxes and claiming refunds owed to them, such as Federal Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit that can boost their yearly income by up to 35 percent.  

The TEAM VITA program is held at the VITA Clinics at TEAM, 30 Elizabeth St.; Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.; and the Milford Senior Center, 9 Jepson Drive, Milford and operates from January 27 to April 15, 2019. 

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offers free preparation of federal and state income tax returns to low-income individuals and families. 

No experience is necessary. All volunteers will receive training appropriate for their position.  Volunteers receive the materials for self-study on basic income tax law for federal and state returns.  
In addition, training sessions will take place in January 2019.  
To become a VITA Volunteer and to learn more about the program, a VITA Information Session will be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at TEAM, 30 Elizabeth St.

All volunteers will receive training appropriate for their position. Volunteers receive the materials for self-study on basic income tax law for federal and state returns.  In addition, specific training sessions will take place in January 2016.
