5K run, 2-mile walk slated in memory of Isabella Gozzo, daughter of Derby coach

DERBY - Derby Middle School Coach Mike Gozzo is once again hosting a 5K and 2-mile walk in memory of his daughter, Isabella Gozzo.

 

Church to host Derby's B.E.S.T. 5K Run, Mile Walk in May

DERBY - Walnut Hill Community Church, at the corner of Smith and Ninth streets, is hosting Derby’s B.E.S.T. 5K Run/Mile Walk May 5.

Since its inception four years ago, this event has raised nearly $20,000 in funding for projects requested by teachers and administrators, that enriched, enhanced, and improved the educational experience of more than 1,500 students in the Derby Public Schools helping to Better Empower the Students and Teachers in Derby Public Schools to succeed.

Walt Mayhew, Pastor, Walnut Hill Community Church’s Valley Campus, explained the church’s involvement.
“Jesus told us to love God and love our neighbor," he said. "We also know the special place children had in Jesus' heart. So this event is a wonderful way for us to live out our faith and look to make our community a better place to live, work, and play.”

The race committee is promoting the event district-wide encouraging students and their families to register to participate in support of the event.
Committee members are also asking businesses in the community to join in the cause as sponsors to help defray the cost of the event in order to maximize the money that can be used to impact the education of Derby students. “Over the past years, we’ve made a difference, but there is still much to be done in order to maximize the impact for the students. throughout the district,” Mayhew said.

The Derby’s B.E.S.T. 5K Run/Walk will step off May 5 on the Derby Greenway starting on the industrial park access road behind BJs, at 20 Division St.
Check in on race day begins at 8 a.m.

The Fun Run begins for younger children begins at 8:30 a.m., while the 5K Run & Mile Walk start at 9 a.m.

Awards with be presented to the top finishers overall and by age group.

A free post-race raffle will be held and post-race refreshments will be served.

Recuperation journey: Proud mama

Last week our son, Cameron, finished his first 5K run on a hot and humid evening in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. 

He finished near the end of the runners, but the important thing is he finished.

Cameron has been training on his own for awhile and getting himself into shape, and I'm proud of his motivation.

He plans to run the Griffin Hospital 5K Walk/Run on Sept. 30 in support of his mom.

He has walked with my team in the past, but running it will be a new experience for him. 

Derby's B.E.S.T. run/walk fundraiser slated on Greenway

DERBY - The annual 5K run, mile walk, and fun run to benefit Derby Public Schools will be held Sept. 24. 

The fundraiser is hosted by Walnut Hill Community Church on the Derby Greenway.

Wesley Village in Shelton plans 7th annual 5K road race

SHELTON - Wesley Village will host the seventh annual benefit 5K Road Race Oct. 24, starting at 9 a.m. Over 400 runners and walkers are expected.

The event takes place at the Wesley Village campus, 580 Long Hill Ave. and features a 5K run, 1-mile walk and ½ mile Kids Fun Run.  

This year’s 5K course will again be a flatter out and back course.

Bring the entire family for a morning of Halloween fun!  Participants are invited to join us at the post-race party for entertainment, a brunch with famous egg sandwiches, smoothies, fruit, granola bars, bagels and more. 

Children’s activities include a bounce house, face painting, a clown, and the opportunity to trick-or-treat!  Costumes are encouraged!  

The first 400 5K entrants will receive a free tech shirt and cotton t-shirts will be given to all other event participants. 

Runners aged 70+ run for free; pre-registration is required.  With over 10 percent of last year’s race field over 70, the race may have one of the highest percentages of older runners in Connecticut.

Race proceeds benefit the award-winning activity program at Wesley Village.  The Wesley Village campus provides independent living, assisted living, memory care, short-term rehab, outpatient therapy and fitness services, and skilled nursing care. 

The title sponsor for this year’s race is CE Floyd Co., Inc.  M&T Bank will be sponsoring the 1-mile Fun Walk and Merit Insurance will be sponsoring the Kids Fun Run.
