Kellogg Environmental Center webinar to highlight humpback whales

DERBY - Kellogg Environmental Center will host a webinar in celebration of Humpback Whale Awareness at 6 p.m. Feb. 17.

February was identified as the whales’ month in 2008 by the governor of Hawaii in recognition of the annual return to their winter habitat. Since then, the celebration has spread worldwide to honor the whales themselves, bring awareness to marine ecosystems, and to connect individuals with our ocean system.

Join to learn about humpbacks and other seagoing species.

The webinar will be presented by Dr. Tammy Silva who is a marine research biologist working for NOAA at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary in Massachusetts.

Silva will provide all ages with an informative program on the ecology of whales, seabirds, and forage fish.

She is currently using biologging (tag) technology to study the movements and behavior of whales and seabirds and will explain this work along with current findings.
