St. Vincent De Paul in Derby seeking food donations

DERBY - The nonprofit St. Vincent De Paul Helping Hands of the Valley “is in desperate need of food to be donated,” thrift shop manager Cindy Barbian said this week.

The organization runs a thrift shop with proceeds supporting a food pantry at 237 Roosevelt Drive.

Barbian said the food pantry especially needs tuna, pasta sauce, soup, canned fruits and vegetables, and instant potatoes, but all donations are welcomed.

“Our shelves are empty and the food drives don’t really start until the end of October for Thanksgiving,” she said.

Barbian expressed gratitude for all the food donations received from an initiative city officials launched earlier this year.
“Derby City Hall (staff) is awesome, they (donate) one item a month, and each month the amount they donate grows.”

This month's requested item is canned soup, and donations can be dropped off at Derby City Hall, 1 Elizabeth St.

September is National Hunger Action Month.
