Derby Public Library to host chess club, board games for teens

DERBY -The Derby Public Library Teen Chess Club invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to meetings each Monday in February (excluding holidays) from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

All skill levels are welcome. 

Participants will learn how the game is played as well as defensive/offensive strategies. 
Julio Maldonado provides superb expertise from a life-long love for the game.  

YA Wednesdays 

The Library hosts YA Wednesdays every month from 6-7:30 p.m.

All young adults ages 12 to 17 are invited to join the fun each Wednesday in February as Nintendo Wii, board games, and Legos will be available. Light refreshments will be provided.

Seymour center sponsoring day trips this winter

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Senior/Community Center is sponsoring a number of day trips open to the public in January and February. 

Day trips are as follows:

UConn Men’s Basketball  vs. Georgetown, Jan. 23, Hartford XL Center, $35 per person includes ticket and mini-bus transportation.

UConn Women’s Basketball vs. Memphis, Jan. 30, Hartford XL Center, $25 per person includes ticket and mini-bus transportation.

Annual Connecticut Garden and Flower Show at the Hartford Convention Center, Feb.18. Tickets will be purchased at the door at a senior discount price of $14 per person, cash only. Transportation will be provided. Limited space on the mini bus.  

A three-day, two-night trip to Atlantic City Tropicana Hotel and Casino is scheduled for April 13-15. The trip includes transportation, hotel accommodations, food coupons, $30 bet voucher and gratuities. Price is $215 per person double occupancy.

Connecticut Historic Gardens group seeks artwork for poster contest

Osborne Homestead grounds in Derby included on list

From the group's website: "Connecticut’s Historic Gardens was started in 2002 by a small group of historic sites with gardens that pooled resources to participate in the annual Connecticut Flower and Garden Show held in Hartford, Ct."

In Derby, the Colonial Revival gardens at the Osborne Homestead Museum, 500 Hawthorne Ave., are listed among the state's historic gardens.

Coffee house scheduled at Grace Bible Church in Shelton

When I was at the community breakfast Saturday at Assumption Church hall in Ansonia I got a schedule for a coffee house in downtown Shelton.

Grace Bible Church, 269 Coram Ave., Shelton, sponsors a music ministry, Beacon On the Hill Coffee House, at 6 p.m. on the third Saturday of every month. 

This coming Saturday, Jan. 16, Christian singer/songwriter Kira Shcerbakova will perform.

Our family has plans (!) Saturday and we won't be able to attend, but we will be attending a subsequent concert.

On Feb. 20 Heartsong will entertain, on March 19 The Core will perform, and Treasure House will be in concert April 16.

Comfort foods are focus of next cooking demo at Derby Public Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled a cooking demonstration at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25.

The topic will be Healthier Comfort Foods.  

Stacey Ference of Savour Catering will offer participants some healthier comfort food recipes to help us get 

through the last weeks of winter. There will be samples available of all demonstrated foods.

The class is for ages 18 years and older. Registration is required.

Community breakfast warms hearts at Assumption Church hall in Ansonia

ANSONIA - This morning my daughter Allegra and I attended a community breakfast sponsored by the Assumption Church Breakfast Club and Master's Table Community Meals, Inc.

The Rev. James Sullivan, pastor, Assumption Church, said, "It's such a wonderful thing to provide this service to those who need a good breakfast. We look at this as (serving) our extended family," he said. 
"We have this beautiful facility and the volunteers providing good food and a good place to have community, in a church setting. It's not like a restaurant, it's a different feeling." 


Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, rolls, pastries, orange juice, coffee, and tea were all part of the menu that more than 50 people enjoyed. The meal is free and open to the public; donations are gratefully accepted.

Griffin Hospital Valley Parish Nurse Maggie Sessa was on hand - as she is at the Master's Table dinners held monthly in the church hall - to answer health questions and perform blood pressure screenings.

It was the third monthly breakfast; stay tuned for information on the February meal. Allegra and I plan to attend again to enjoy food and friendly conversation.
