Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers in Ansonia to host open house

ANSONIA - The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers will host an open house from 2-6 p.m. June 30 to highlight its new Ansonia location and new scholarship and grant opportunities.
The school is pleased to announce a new scholarship program available to prospective students.
Futuro Health and the Elizabeth C. Deluca Foundation will provide scholarships that cover the full cost of tuition for the school’s Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), Phlebotomy and Medical Assistant programs. The scholarships are part of the organizations’ shared mission to support growth, health and wealth of communities by supporting adults seeking a rewarding career in healthcare.
Applicants must be 18 years of age to apply.
The school also has partnerships with TEAM Inc., The Workplace, Inc. and other grant programs that can reduce tuition costs.
The school recently moved to 219 Division St. in Ansonia, offering increased space for classrooms and its fully equipped hospital patient care simulation room. The open house will give prospective students a chance to tour the facility and learn more about the school’s CNA, Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy and Patient Care Technician training programs.
The School of Allied Health Careers provides exceptional healthcare education with knowledgeable and experienced teachers who are nationally certified or master’s prepared nurses.
Students receive unmatched experience in a seven-time Newsweek World’s Best Hospital in programs including Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, Patient Care Technician, and Nursing Assistant. Accredited by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education and approved by the State of Connecticut Department of Health, the school offers one-on-one teaching that has helped its graduates achieve a high rate of success on certification tests. Also, the school boasts a strong job placement rate with most graduates quickly finding positions at Griffin or other area hospitals and medical practices
Students must be proficient in the English language to apply for admission.
The COVID 19 vaccination series is required prior to enrollment.

'Turnback Tuesday' highlights tool used to smooth arrow shafts
Turnback Tuesday is sharing this abrader shaft from Milford, Ct. The abrader was used to smooth or straighten arrow shafts.
The groove would typically have a U or V shape. This shaft is part of the Derby Public Library collection.

Griffin Hospital annual 5K Walk/Run fundraiser slated Sept. 20

DERBY - The Annual 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., will celebrate its 17th year Sept. 20.
This non-competitive, family-friendly event begins with day-of registration at 7:30 a.m., and starts at 9 a.m.
D'Addario Automotive Group in Shelton is this year’s Presenting Sponsor.
Registration is $35 and includes a T-shirt. The registration fees will increase by $5 after Sept. 8. Pre-registration is encouraged at griffinhealth.org/5k.
Sponsorship opportunities include signage at the event, logos on the event promotional materials and T-shirts, recognition from the stage, and the opportunity to have a table to distribute products at the event.

All proceeds are dedicated to providing exceptional, personalized cancer care and to help ease the financial burden Griffin’s cancer patients face as they undergo treatment.
The 5K draws walkers and runners from all over the Lower Naugatuck Valley, including participants from Derby, Ansonia, Shelton, Seymour, Oxford, Naugatuck, and all over the state.
The 5k Walk/Run was started by the caregivers of the Cancer Center as a way to raise funds to purchase wigs for patients.
The first Walk/Run exceeded expectations drawing over 250 participants and raising more than $25,000, providing opportunity for additional financial support for patients as they undergo cancer treatment. The 5K has drawn thousands of participants over the years and raised more than $890,000 to help support local cancer survivors in its 16-year history.
Participants can walk or run individually, form a team with their family, friends and co-workers, and collect pledges and payments.
Awards will be presented to the top fundraising team and the top fundraising individual at the event.
Participants can also purchase a commemorative sign for $100 to honor or memorialize a loved one that will be displayed at The Center for Cancer Care.
