Woman celebrates 100th birthday at Wesley Heights in Shelton

Wesley Village resident Anne Griffin celebrates her 100th birthday at Lifestyle Transitions at Wesley

SHELTON - Anne Griffin, a resident at Lifestyle Transitions at Wesley Heights, commemorated her 100th birthday earlier this month. Griffin, a former librarian at a New York City school, brings a rich variety of experiences and an abundance of spirit to the community.
Her passion for learning endures to this day, along with her ability to inspire the love of learning in others. This energetic centenarian begins each day by reading The New York Times and drinking her favorite beverage--coffee with cream. Later, she often continues reading the book she is currently engrossed in while enjoying various daily activities.

Lifestyle Transitions, an assisted living and memory care neighborhood, is part of the Wesley Heights senior living community on the Wesley Village Campus. Anne Griffin was the first resident to move into the neighborhood when it opened as a supportive memory care community nearly 10 years ago.
Since then, she has continued to enjoy good health, engages in a variety of hobbies and social events, and thrives in the nurturing, supportive environment provided by Lifestyle Transitions. Members of the community held a birthday celebration in her honor to recognize the milestone.

Happily married for 40 years to Nathaniel Griffin, who passed away in 2010, Anne Griffin has always preferred immersing herself in the printed word, exploring new places, going to the theater, and shopping for exquisite treasures. She enjoys attending church, loves reminiscing about her travels, and looks forward to experiencing new adventures. She also doesn't shy away from a good meal with a delicious dessert!

Although her husband and only sibling have passed away, Griffin still maintains a positive outlook on life that charms her friends and staff at Wesley Village. Her companionship and lively conversation make her one of the community's well- known residents.
In addition, the warm, caring environment on the campus allows Griffin and others to thrive as they spend their days talking about cherished memories, engaging in social activities, and taking delight in living their golden years to the fullest.

“Anne brings a wealth of experience and a zest for life that enriches our community,” says the staff at Wesley Village. “Her intellectual curiosity, active spirit, and positive outlook are an inspiration to all of us. We are grateful to have her in the Wesley Village family.”

Wesley Village in Shelton hosts monthly support group for caregivers

SHELTON - There are 80,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease in Connecticut and twice as many caregivers, many unpaid family members, and friends.

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia can be challenging. Changes in the person’s behavior as the disease progresses can lead to frustration and anxiety. We [at Wesley Village] are here to help.

In collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter, Wesley Village hosts a support group at its senior living campus, 580 Long Hill Ave., on the second Tuesday of each month

The group is free to attend and specifically designed for those caring for someone with any form of dementia.

The next meeting will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday.

Alzheimer’s Association® support groups, led by trained facilitators, are a safe place for care partners to develop a support system, exchange practical information on challenges and possible solutions, talk through issues and ways of coping and learn about community resources.

"When caring for the most important people in our lives, it can seem selfish to carve out a small amount of time for our own well-being,” said Ann Panagulias, Activities Director at Lifestyle Transitions at Wesley Heights, a memory care neighborhood on the campus. Panagulias, a Certified Dementia Practitioner, co-facilitates the group at Wesley Village with the Alzheimer’s Association.  “One member of our group often reminds us what flight attendants advise before every take-off: ‘Put on your oxygen mask first, then assist others.’  A key to good caregiving is being a healthy caregiver.  Our inspirational group provides a safe space to talk, listen, breathe, cry and even laugh. "

Those interested in participating in the group may contact Ann Panagulias at 203-447-5407 or apanagulias@umh.org.

For more information about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, support groups or any of the Alzheimer’s Association education classes, contact the 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900, the Connecticut Chapter main office at 860-406-3040 or visit www.alz.org/ct

Wesley Village in Shelton celebrates birthdays of 2 centenarians

Larry Meehan

Norma-Jean Moore

SHELTON - Wesley Village Senior Living Campus recently celebrated birthday milestones for two centenarians, Larry Meehan and Norma-Jean Moore, both residents of Crosby Commons Assisted Living Community.

Family members, friends, and Crosby team members gathered throughout February to send happy birthday wishes to these special individuals.

Meehan, who served as a firefighter for several years in Bridgeport, was surprised with a parade of local fire trucks, lights flashing and sirens blaring, driving by the community’s front entrance for the occasion.

With the help of Lisa Bisson, Director of Community Outreach for the campus, Meehan also received a birthday visit from several members of the Bridgeport Area Retired Firefighters Association, who presented him with a special plaque in honor of his service to the community and his 100th birthday milestone.

Moore is well known as Crosby Commons’ “artist-in-residence."

Many of her paintings are displayed outside her apartment and several were showcased in the community’s weekly activities calendar in honor of her birthday.

She enjoyed visits with family and friends, flowers, balloons in all her favorite colors, and a birthday cake detailed with songbirds. A lover of sparkles and all things jeweled, Moore was also presented with a rhinestone tiara adorned with the number 100, which she wore throughout the day.

“One hundredth birthday milestones are some of the most special moments we share together as a community here at Crosby Commons,” said Activities Director, Lauren Donovan. “The opportunity to celebrate everything a resident has accomplished, and the uniqueness of their life is just as meaningful for the residents and their families as it is for our team.”
