'Turnback Tuesday' features Hotchkiss Hose 100th anniversary ribbon

Turnback Tuesday is sharing one of the artifacts in Derby Public Library’s collection: A delegate pin/ribbon from the Firemen’s Convention held in Derby in August 1937, the year Hotchkiss Hose celebrated 100 years.

Hotchkiss Hose #1 was formed on June 7, 1837 by Edward N. Shelton, Julius Hotchkiss, Ephraim Curtiss and Edward Lewis.

The first headquarters was in a barn owned by L. Loomer on the corner of Third and Minerva Streets in Derby.

The current location is on David Humphreys Road. Hotchkiss Hose has been serving the citizens and businesses of Derby for 188 years. Thank you.

DERBY - The annual Easter Flower Sale will be held Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hotchkiss Hose Company 1, 200 David Humphreys Road.

From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Hotchkiss Hose Company 1 in Derby

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features an image of the first motorized firetruck purchased in 1914 by the Hotchkiss Hose Company No.1.

The oldest fire company still functioning in Derby, Hotchkiss Hose Company No.1 was officially formed in June of 1837 after Edward N. Shelton collected 100 signatures from residents of Birmingham.

Mr. Shelton wanted to create a fire company in the area because one of his industrial plants was located on Main Street. On June 3rd, the resolution was approved by the state legislature. The original fire company was housed in an old barn owned by L.L. Loomer on the northwest corner of Third and Minerva Streets.

However, in order to expand the company, a stone building was erected on Caroline Street In 1844 so the company could relocate there.

In 1861, yet another building was erected for the company on Caroline Street, this time by one Steven Summers who wished to procure the stone building.

There the company remained until finally moving to its present location at 200 David Humphreys Road.

The Caroline Street location was still maintained as a means to store the first truck, and this picture shows that vehicle in front of the Caroline Street facility.

Hotchkiss Hose in Derby selling T-shirts to support Center for Cancer Care

Logo on this year's Hotchkiss Hose fund-raising T-shirt. 

DERBY - Hotchkiss Hose is again selling breast cancer awareness T-shirts to raise funds to be donated to the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital. 
Shirts are $20 for all sizes from adult small through XXXL; $5 from each shirt goes towards the donation.

The Hotchkiss Hose Co. 1 Fire Department in Derby recently donated $500 to The Valley Goes Pink Campaign to support the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital.
Members of the department sold specially designed T-shirts as a fundraiser and the department matched the amount raised.

Derby mayor swears in fire chief, 3 assistants

Derby Mayor Anita Dugatto administered the oath of office Jan. 2 to the fire department's chief officers at a ceremony in Hotchkiss Hose Fire Company 1 Hall. 

They are:

Robert J. Laskowski Jr. - 1st Assistant Chief
David M. Lenart - 2nd Assistant Chief 
Michael F. Gloade - 3rd Assistant Chief

Derby FD to hold swearing-in ceremony at Hotchkiss Hose Company

Derby holds 9/11 remembrance ceremony on 15th anniversary of terrorist attacks

Hotchkiss Hose Company 1 of Derby sponsored its annual ceremony Sunday to remember the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The event was held next to the 9/11 monument (above) on the Derby Green.

Derby mayor to hold open door session at Hotchkiss Hose Company 1

DERBY – Mayor Anita Dugatto is continuing her pledge to take some of her Open Door Sessions on the road into the heart of Derby's neighborhoods.
Open Door Sessions are weekly forums where citizens can drop in at Derby City Hall for casual discussions with the mayor. 
They are held every Thursday between 5 and 7 p.m. 
These forums are a reflection of Dugatto’s belief that responsive government begins with understanding the needs and priorities of its citizens.

“By taking some of my Open Door Sessions on the road, I am able to connect with people where they live and do business," Dugatto said. 
"It gives me and other city officials the opportunity to learn first-hand about the issues affecting our neighborhoods.” 
This month Dugatto and other city officials will be at the Hotchkiss Hose Fire Station, 200 David Humphreys Road, from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 18.

In addition to learning more about City initiatives, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on any issues important to them.
Members of the business community also are encouraged to attend.
