Griffin Health, Agency on Aging to host neck health presentations

Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut will host an interactive program designed to help Valley seniors care for their necks this May.

Caregivers from Griffin Health’s Physical Medicine will lead The Importance of Cervical Spine Health, a free presentation on the cervical spine anatomy, importance of maintaining neck health and proper posture, and tips for maintaining proper cervical position while performing everyday tasks. 

The presentation will include a demonstration of cervical stretches. Griffin Health caregivers will also offer free blood pressure screenings and consultation.
The presentations are scheduled for May 4 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center, May 7 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center, May 14 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Oxford Senior Center, May 20 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center, and May 28 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library.

Griffin, Agency on Aging to host heart-health bingo for seniors in February

Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut will host fun and educational programs on heart health for Valley seniors this February.

Griffin Health Director of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Richard Le Pera, MPH, CCRP, will lead Boost Your Heart Health, a free discussion of the basics of heart health followed by games of heart-healthy bingo. 

Griffin Health caregivers will also offer free blood pressure screenings and consultation. 

The presentations are scheduled for Feb. 2 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center, Feb. 5 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center, Feb. 25 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center, and Feb. 26 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library.

Griffin Health, Agency on Aging schedule wellness programs in January

DERBY - Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut will host a series of wellness programs this January that will help with age-related loss.

Griffin Health Chaplain Eric Gramse will host Loneliness & Age-Related Loss, an open discussion of the various types of loss that people can experience as they age, how loss can affect them and ways to move forward in a healthy way. 

The presentations are scheduled for Jan. 5 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center, Jan. 8 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center, Jan. 22 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library, and Jan. 28 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Shelton Senior Center.

Griffin Health, Agency on Aging to inform seniors about opioid overdose

Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut are hosting a series of talks to inform seniors about know what can do in the event of an opioid overdose this October.

Naugatuck Valley Health District Overdose Prevention Navigator Austin Telford, MPH, CCHW, will present “Narcan and You: Empowering Seniors to Respond to an Opioid Overdose,” which provides essential information on recognizing the signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer Narcan (naloxone), a safe and effective nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose. 

The discussion will cover how to obtain Narcan, what to do in an emergency, and the importance of this life-saving tool in protecting friends, family, and community members. 

Griffin Health caregivers will also be offering free blood pressure screenings and consultations at the events.

The presentations are scheduled for Oct. 2 from 2-3 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center, Oct. 6 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center, Oct. 22 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center, and Oct. 23 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library.

Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut are hosting a series of talks about sleep health and providing free blood pressure screenings for seniors throughout the Valley in September.

Respiratory therapists from the Sleep Wellness Center at Griffin Hospital will present “Healthy Sleep after 50: What You Need to Know,” which will discuss common sleep issues in older adults and effective treatments to help them sleep soundly and wake refreshed. 

Griffin Health caregivers will also be offering free blood pressure screenings and consultations.

Griffin Health program to help Valley seniors conserve physical energy

Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut are hosting a series of talks about physical energy conservation and free blood pressure screenings for seniors throughout the Valley in June.

Therapists from Griffin Health Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will present “Following the Four Ps of Energy Conservation,” which will explore tips and strategies for seniors and those with a wide variety of physical conditions that can help them safely complete tasks and activities of daily living. There will also be a discussion of dizziness and fall risks and free blood pressure screenings and consultations.

The events are scheduled for June 2 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center; June 5 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center; June 25 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center; and June 26 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Derby Neck Library.

Griffin Health Director of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Richard Le Pera, MPH, CCRP, will discuss heart disease, how it can be identified, and treatments. 

This presentation includes information on calcium scoring, stress testing, echocardiograms and electrocardiograms, cardiac interventions such as angiogram/angioplasty, Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Valve Replacement/Repair, and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement. 

Griffin Health caregivers will also be offering free blood pressure screenings and consultations.

Griffin Health to host fire safety events for Valley seniors in September

DERBY - Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut are hosting a series of fire safety events for seniors throughout the Valley in September.

The events will feature a discussion of home fire prevention and safety tips by the area fire department representatives, and the American Red Cross will be scheduling appointments for their Home Fire Preparedness Campaign which offers free smoke alarms with installation.
