'Turnback Tuesday' highlights Polish bakery in downtown Derby

Turnback Tuesday looks at the Polish bakery in Derby.

Established in 1919, the White Eagle Bakery was located at 84 Factory St. Within a year, a second location was added at 135 Main St., Derby (blue arrow) which also specialized in meats and groceries. Then, a feed shop at 137 Main St. was added in 1931 (green arrow).

The building was the Derby Transcript Co. building founded in the late 1860s. This image was taken in 1935.

The gentleman with the red arrow is Klemens Konicki, baker for White Eagle. He is the grandfather of John E. Konicki who donated this image to Derby Public Library.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.
