DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., has scheduled a variety of activities for April.

Dinner and Movie
The Library will host Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. April 6.  
Enjoy a new feature film on blu-ray and a large screen. Free movie refreshments will be served, including a pizza dinner at intermission.

Women's Forum

On  April 17 at 12:30 p.m., the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a discussion group that pursues history and literature. This month’s topic features two short stories by Russian author Irina Denezhkina—copies are available at the library. Feel free to bring a light lunch.  We serve free coffee and tea.  

Tech Talks

At 6 p.m. April 17 and again at 10:30 a.m. April 19, the Library hosts Tech Talks, a monthly program that focuses on what is new in technology and how it best suits your individual needs.  

Evening Book Club

The Library hosts the Evening Book Club, moderated by reference librarian Pat Sweeney, Ph.D. at 6:30 p.m. April 24. 
This month’s selection is “Reflections in a Golden Eye” by Carson McCullers.  
Copies of the book are available at the library. This group focuses on novellas and memoirs by award-winning authors. 

Maple sugaring presentation

On April 25 at 6:30 p.m., the Library presents poet, essayist, and naturalist David Leff who explores the mysteries and mystique of “Maple Sugaring in New England.”  
Learn this ancient craft and its benefits to your health. Leff’s numerous books on Connecticut’s beauties and natural history will be available for purchase and signing.

Ansonia celebrates St. Patrick's Day in style

Talented dancers from the Mulkerin School of Irish Dance in West Haven perform on Main Street Saturday at the city's 10th annual Irish Flag Raising ceremony.

Ansonia PD posts street closing info for Saturday

ANSONIA - On Saturday at 11 a.m. the City of Ansonia will be having a flag-raising ceremony in honor of St. Patrick’s Day at Ansonia City Hall, 253 Main St. 

Main Street from Water Street to Kingston Drive will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. while the ceremony takes place. 

Southbound Main Street traffic will be detoured onto Kingston Drive to East Main Street or West Main Street to Bridge Street and back to Main Street. Northbound Main Street traffic will be detoured onto Water Street to West Main Street to Kingston Drive and back to Main Street.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host a free talk about getting active through lawn care at 6 p.m. March 29 at the hospital, 130 Division St.

Are you green with envy for your neighbor's lawn? Learn the secrets of the professionals and golf courses to keep your lawn green and healthy. 

Experienced horticulturalist Francine Vallillo will present “All about Lawns,” providing tips on improving your lawn by selecting the right seed mix, knowing when to fertilize and how to mow properly. 

The talk will identify types of insects, diseases, and weeds and how to prevent and control them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yard work is a moderate-intensity level activity, which the CDC recommends two and a half hours of each week to help prevent chronic health conditions.

This series is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U program, a series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics.

Wesley Village in Shelton hosts monthly dementia support group

SHELTON- Do you know or care for someone recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia? 

Are you in need of support? You’re not alone! 

Caregivers are invited to Wesley Village 
April 20 and every third Thursday of the month, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. for an Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group. 

The group will offer problem-solving techniques, helpful support and group conversations for families and caregivers and is facilitated by Wesley Village staff. 

Please inquire about your loved one participating in activities while you attend. 

Wesley Village is a campus of senior care communities including Crosby Commons Independent and Assisted Living Community, Wesley Heights Assisted and Independent Living Apartments and Cottages, Lifestyle Transitions Memory Care at Wesley Heights, and Bishop Wicke Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Seymour Dems seek candidates for November election

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Democratic Town Committee is seeking candidates to run for various town offices in November’s municipal election and will being choosing a slate for the July convention.

The party is looking for residents interested in running for the following boards:  

Board of Selectmen, Board of Education, Board of Finance, Board of Assessment Appeals, Board of Police Commissioners, Board of Library Directors and the Planning & Zoning Commission. 

The town committee will be supporting candidates that are invested in their community:  looking to make it a better place to live, work, raise a family and stay after retirement.  Interested candidates should be able to work well with others for the improvement of Seymour.  

The committee will nominate and endorse a slate of candidates in July.  

Any registered voter in Seymour may seek nomination.
