Soupstock to serve music, art in Shelton

SHELTON - The 6^th Annual Soupstock  Music & Arts Festival will be held from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. June 20 and from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. June 21 at Veteran’s Park off Canal Street.

The festival once again invites area residents of all ages to come and experience an arts, music and culinary experience like no other. 

Producers Joe Mango and Nicole Heriot-Mikula unveil a lineup and expanded festival that follows the contour of previous festivals celebrating the best in local talent to match national acts otherwise reserved for ticketed events. 

New this year, Los Angeles Electrofunk powerhouse Particle co-headline with New Orleans Funk group Big Sam’s Funky Nation. Also returning is favorite Ryan Montbleau who is in the midst of his own regional tour. 
Also sharing top billing are Cabinet and Roots of Creation, who are both making their first appearance at Soupstock.

Performers at this year’s festival also include Nardy Boy, Hayley Jane and the Primates, Beau Sasser’s Escape Plan. and local favorites The Alpaca Gnomes and Hubinger St. 

Established in 2010, the Soupstock Music & Arts Festival has grown organically into one of Connecticut’s leading independent arts and music events. 
The festival has earned its reputation by attracting premier talent across all mediums to provide a landscape meant to please all the senses. 
The festival’s mixture is arts, cuisine, and culture and that means there is something for everyone. 

The vendor village will be larger than ever with more than 50 handmade artisans and 10 food trucks vendors. The Kids Zone sponsored by A Child’s Garden once again provides a safe, interactive environment for children ages 12 and under. 
The festival is rounded out with a 6^th Annual Art Competition and Pro/Am Soup Cook-Off on Saturday and Chili Cook-Off on Sunday. 

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for Soup or Chili Tent. Children 12 and under are admitted free. 
A family package is available for only $35 per day. 

Proceeds will benefit The Mary A. Schmecker Turtle Shell Fund, Building Community Through The Arts.

CWV Post in Derby to host dinner and movie

DERBY - Catholic War Veterans Post 1562 and Auxiliary will hold their monthly Pasta Dinner and a Movie at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Post, 112 Derby Ave.

Have some pasta, meatballs, salad, and dessert for only $6 and if you like, stay for the movie and popcorn.

5K Walk-Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care in Derby offers fun, raises awareness

DERBY - A tractor painted pink that was on display in memory of a Shelton resident who died from cancer was a highlight of Saturday's 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital here.

Here is our great-nephew Adam posing in front of the tractor. He was one of the youngest runners who participated in the seventh annual, non-competitive event.

The tractor is dedicated to the memory of the late Catherine Sullivan DeFelice, who died three years ago from cancer. 
DeFelice had survived breast cancer for 25 years, her twin sister, Corrine Sullivan Gilbert of Ansonia said, but succumbed to another form of the disease.

The tractor is a 1946 model. That was the year that Corrine and Catherine were born. Corrine said her husband, Lyman Gilbert, former Ansonia fire chief, owns several tractors. He painted this one pink in honor of the year they were born.

Ingrid Edschteyn, DO, talked about the importance of good nutrition and regular exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She is a preventive medicine and lifestyle medicine physician.

The Mediums, a talented acoustic duo based in New Haven, entertained.

Kudos to all those who made the Griffin Hospital 5K and the survivors' picnic successful.

Cassetti meets Rubio at Prescott Bush Awards Dinner in Stamford

ANSONIA - Mayor David S. Cassetti attended the 37th annual Prescott Bush Awards Dinner Thursday at the Crowne Plaza in Stamford.

The annual awards dinner welcomed U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio as the keynote speaker. 

Rubio addressed a crowd of approximately 750 to speak about the country and the direction it is heading.

The Presentation of Awards included the Fenton P. Futtner Award to Sharon McLaughlin, the Women’s Leadership Award to House Republican Leader the Honorable Themis Klarides, and the Prescott Bush, Sr. Award to the Honorable Mayor Mark Boughton. 

The program was also dedicated to the memory of state Rep. Larry Miller, state Sen. Tom Herlihy, State Central Committee member Matt Corcoran, and State Central Committee member Art DeSorbo.

"It was an honor and a privilege to join fellow Republicans in welcoming Senator Rubio to Connecticut. He is a wonderful representative of the Republican party and he is a genuinely good person. I think the country will embrace him and I wish him all the best," Cassetti said.

ICYMI: Griffin Hospital in Derby changes 5K Walk/Run date

DERBY - The Annual Griffin Hospital 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care is moving to June. 

Griffin Hospital moved this traditional event to Saturday (June 6) to pair it with the hospital’s annual National Cancer Survivors’ activities.

“For the past six years, the Walk/Run has always been about bringing the community together to honor, celebrate and support local cancer survivors, so it seems like a perfect fit to move the Walk/Run to the weekend that we have traditionally invited our survivors to come back to the Center for Cancer Care to celebrate their strength,” said Christian Meagher, Walk/Run Director. 

Started as a way to celebrate the first anniversary of the building of the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, the first Walk/Run drew over 200 participants and raised more than $25,000. 

By 2014, those numbers grew to more than 560 participants and more than $50,000. Overall, the event has brought in more than $240,000 to help support local cancer survivors. 

This non-competitive, family-friendly event draws walkers and runners from all over the Lower Naugatuck Valley, including participants from Derby, Ansonia, Shelton, Seymour, Oxford, Naugatuck, and all over the state. 

Proceeds are earmarked for special needs of cancer patients, such as support for transportation, groceries and wig and salon services, as well as patient support programs at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital. Area cancer survivors are invited to celebrate the event at a free survivors’ reception that offers food and free massages. 

Participants can walk or run individually, or may form a team with their family, friends and co-workers. 

Participants may also collect pledges or purchase a commemorative sign to honor or memorialize a loved one at the event. 
Check-in for the event begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Center for Cancer Care parking lot, 350 Seymour Ave. 

The Walk/Run is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is encouraged, and the first 500 registered participants will receive T-shirts. 

The 5K registration fee will increase from $25 to $30 after May 23. Individuals and teams can register online at griffinhealth.org/5k.

Connecticut attractions slate Open House Day June 13

         SHELTON - On June 13, Shelton Historical Society will be among many attractions 

across the state participating in Connecticut Open House Day at its complex at Shelton 

History Center, 70 Ripton Road.

          From noon-4 p.m., visitors will enjoy seeing six historic structures and have the opportunity to take a guided tour or participate in activities at several stations.
