Griffin Health to host Children's Health and Safety Fair at Warsaw Park in Ansonia

ANSONIA - The 20^th annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair will be April 30 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Warsaw Park on Pulaski Highway to help families get ready for a fun and healthy summer.

Griffin Hospital Community Outreach and Valley Parish Nurse Program, Safe Kids Greater Naugatuck Valley, Griffin Faculty Physicians, and area health and safety organizations will offer free healthy treats, free raffles, games, and information on a variety of health, wellness and safety programs. 

The event will be held rain or shine.

Interactive health, wellness and safety displays at the event will include water and summer safety, child passenger safety, pedestrian safety, exercise and sports safety, medication and poison prevention safety, pet safety, nutrition, social emotional learning, safe sleep for infants, germbusters, backpack safety, CPR, fire and home safety, and more. 

Safe Kids and Griffin Health will also host a bike helmet clinic, with free, fitted bike helmets available for the first 300 children.

Griffin Faculty Physicians and Ansonia Public Schools will provide healthy snacks. There will also be story time throughout the event, a garden planting activity sponsored by Home Depot and the Valley Community Foundation, touch-a-truck, photo booth, free books, raffles, and a prize wheel.

Main Street Shell in Ansonia robbed at gunpoint, suspects sought

Suspect in armed robbery.

ANSONIA - Police said today that about 11:15 p.m. Monday the Main Street Shell Station, 696 Main St. was robbed at gunpoint by a male. 

The suspect was armed with a handgun and threatened the store clerk before stealing cash and cigars. 

The clerk was unharmed and the suspect fled the area in a black Chevy. Shortly after the robbery the Shelton Police Department recovered a stolen Chevy Cruz color black which was positively identified as the suspect vehicle. 

The Chevy was unoccupied, it was towed back to the Ansonia Police Department impound where it was processed for evidence. 

Surveillance video showed and the clerk described the suspect as a black male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall wearing a black zippered jacket, a light colored surgical mask and carrying a handgun.

Ansonia man, 18, arrested in connection with homicide in April, 2022

Errol Salkey

ANSONIA - Errol Salkey, 18, of Ansonia was arraigned today at Milford Superior Court for his involvement in the April 5, 2022 homicide of Johnny Class. 

Salkey, who was 17 at the time of the homicide, was taken into custody by the Orange Police Department on March 16, 2023 during an unrelated investigation and turned over to the Ansonia Police Department, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a written release.  

Salkey was arraigned in juvenile court, where the case was transferred to adult court.

Salkey was charged with felony murder, criminal attempt at robbery first degree, and conspiracy to commit robbery first degree. Salkey is being held on a $1,250,000 bond and his next court date is June 2, 2023.

Police said additional arrests are anticipated.

Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center study to examine eggs as part of DASH Diet

DERBY – The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center at Griffin Hospital has recently received funding for a study to examine how adding two daily eggs to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan will affect diet quality and heart health.

The DASH eating plan features fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, poultry, and low-fat dairy products. It is recommended by the American Heart Association for people at risk for cardiovascular disease.

The study team plans to enroll 45 adults with high blood cholesterol, including men 18 years or older and post-menopausal women who are not on hormone replacement therapy. Study participants will receive monetary compensation along with nutrition guidance to follow the DASH diet for 28 weeks and a supply of eggs to eat daily during eight of those weeks. 

The study team will examine the effects of adding eggs to the DASH eating plan on their diet quality, blood vessel function, blood lipid and glucose levels, and other measures of cardiovascular health.

This study is funded by the Egg Nutrition Center, the science and nutrition education division of the American Egg Board that sponsors health-related scientific research that is primarily focused on eggs.
