SHELTON - The Parent Child Resource Center plans to raise $80,000 through its signature fundraiser “Pedal for PCRC” for its children’s mental health services that help children and their families throughout Connecticut.
“Pedal for PCRC” will be held May 15 at PerkinElmer, 710 Bridgeport Ave. Free bicycle helmets will be distributed to all those who attend.
The fifth annual “Pedal for PCRC” features three street bike rides, a kids' ride, walk, health fair, "Activity Spree"
“This event has grown exponentially each year, and we look forward to members of the community attending to see the new activities and demonstrations we have scheduled,” said Veronica Parsloe, Director of Development & Marketing.
The three street rides include 15-mile, 30-mile and 62-mile options.
Routes travel throughout the Lower Naugatuck Valley and further, including Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton, Southbury, Stratford, and Trumbull. These routes have been changed this year to be flatter and allow easier access for riders, so that all members of the community are able to participate, not just avid cyclists.
The registration fee for a riders is $25; we ask all riders to raise at least $75 from friends and family.
The kids' ride and walk have a two-mile course located in the secured upper parking lot at PerkinElmer, which is monitored by hired security and volunteers.
This allows kids to ride their bikes and support PCRC, with their parents or guardians able to walk or ride with them. The course is open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. entry at any time during this period. There is a $25 entry fee for the kids ride and walk.
The Health Fair and “Activity Spree” are open 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The Health Fair will offer free bike helmets from Griffin Hospital’s Valley Parish Nurse Program, including a proper fitting and safety education, and complimentary spinal screenings by Southern Connecticut Chiropractic.
The free “Activity Spree” offers activities and demonstrations for all ages, including a drum circle, proper stretching techniques, Zumba, hands-only CPR, and kickboxing.

The ride will conclude with a “Thank You” BBQ by David M. Grant Caterers and beer provided by Black Hog Brewing. Food and beverages will be sold at cost for all guests who are not riding.
