Logan, conservationists celebrate World Water Day

State Sen. George S. Logan, R-Ansonia, joined with an alliance of environmental and preservation organizations from across Connecticut Wednesday to celebrate water on “United Nations World Water Day."  
Logan, vice-chairman of the legislature’s Public Health Committee, discussed the need for lawmakers to safeguard Connecticut’s water resources when setting policy. He noted that protecting and conserving water should be a top priority in Connecticut and worldwide.  

Logan represents Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck, and Woodbridge.

Gentile participates in forum focusing on jobs in medical field

State Rep. Linda M. Gentile

HARTFORD - State Rep. Linda Gentile, D-Ansonia, Derby, Friday participated in an information forum at the Commission on Economic Competitiveness focused on developing a cluster of jobs in the medical and personal health field.

“I believe that one of the most important things that I can do as a legislator and policymaker is look for opportunities and ways to create jobs and improve our economy. That is why I attended and participated in this forum focusing on the creation of jobs in the medical field,” Gentile said.

The meeting discussed establishing and maintaining an Asset Inventory across the state to identify Connecticut organizations and companies working in bioscience, biopharma, biotech, genomics, clinomics, epigenomes, pharmacogenomics, and related fields.

By identifying these organizations, the state can promote business development through competitions that will incentivize firms or individuals located anywhere in the world to come into Connecticut. Furthermore, the state will be able to retain talent and invite and recruit experts in the fields of precision medicine and personalized health work in CT to build a critical mass of talent.

The economic impact of building a cluster and critical mass around precision medicine will have strong and positive effects cross the state.

The Commission on Economic Competitiveness works to analyze the implications of state tax policy on state business and industry and to develop policies that promote economic growth.

Ansonia legislator retains leadership post in state House

HARTFORD - State Rep. Linda M. Gentile, D-Derby/Ansonia, has her 2017 legislative committee assignments.  

The committees are: Commerce, Higher Education & Employment Advancement, and Planning & Development.

“I am looking forward to continuing my work in the area of Brownfields and economic development on Commerce,” Gentile said.  

She added, “I’m excited to be back with P&D where I will seek sensible regional efficiencies that reduce costs for local cities and towns.  

"And my reappointment to Higher Education gives me the chance to guide the realignment of our community college system, ensuring that our young people are better prepared for the workplace upon graduation.”

In addition to Commerce, Higher Education, and P&D, Gentile’s duties include work on the Joint Legislative Management Committee.  

And, Gentile retains the title and responsibilities of Deputy House Speaker.

House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz and House Majority Leader Matt Ritter announced the committee assignments Friday.

Gentile hails long-term deal between Sikorsky, state

Helicopter manufacturer to stay in Connecticut at least 16 years

State Rep. Linda M. Gentile, D-Ansonia, Derby, said today she is very pleased Sikorsky Aircraft, which has made its home in Stratford since 1929, will remain here until at least 2032.

"This is very good news not only for the state of Connecticut, but especially the Lower Naugatuck Valley,” Gentile said. 

“Both my father and father-in-law worked at Sikorsky, along with so many other men and women from Ansonia and Derby. This deal, along with the work we have already done in the manufacturing sector, and will continue to do, will guarantee good-paying jobs and continued residency here for generations to come."

After meeting with Sikorsky parent Lockheed Martin, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced a deal in which the helicopter giant will be eligible for financial incentives in exchange for building nearly 200 CH-53K King Stallion helicopters in Connecticut. 

The incentives, worth up to $220 million, include exemption from sales and use taxes and annual grants during the term of the deal. 

In turn, Sikorsky and Lockheed will keep its HQ and primary manufacturing in the state, retain and expand its full-time staff, increase capital spending, and give top priority to its Connecticut-based suppliers.

“This agreement requires legislative approval,” Gentile said. “There should be no dissenting votes on this matter. It’s a no-brainer that we must move as quickly as possible to secure such an important employer as Sikorsky. The company is vital to the stability of our economy and for the thousands of families who depend on these highly-skilled manufacturing jobs.”

Farm bureau recognizes Gentile for support of agriculture

HARTFORD - The Connecticut Farm Bureau Association has recognized State Rep. Linda M. Gentile, D-Ansonia, with the Legislator of the Year Award for her support of Connecticut agriculture in the 2014 legislative session.

The award was announced at CFBA’s annual meeting, but was recently presented to Gentile at her office at the Legislative Office Building.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition from such a distinguished organization,” she said. “Agriculture is such an important part of our history and very much a part of the fabric of our local communities. It is a huge economic force in Connecticut. As such, we need to do whatever is possible to protect, preserve and expand farm operations and commercial agriculture in this state.”

The Connecticut Farm Bureau acknowledged Gentile’s work on the animal care bill in her role as Chair of the Environment Committee.
Among her efforts on that bill, she authored an editorial in the New Haven Register calling for sound, science based reason in legislating animal care in Connecticut.

“Representative Gentile laid out the issue so clearly for the committee and to the public through that editorial,” says Connecticut Farm Bureau Executive Director Henry Talmage. “She advocated for a livestock advisory council working in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture and the Connecticut Farm Bureau and expressed her confidence that this collaboration could and would establish comprehensive, consistent, and reasonable standards for all livestock.”
