Solemn Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony on Derby Green focuses on patriotism

Decorated U.S. Army veteran Andrew Fierlit, captain of the Bridgeport Fire Department, was guest speaker. He spoke about the growth of patriotism throughout the U.S. after the 9/11 attacks.

Scout Troop 3 member Jackson Cotter was one of several Scouts holding a Sept. 11 flag in the gazebo on the Derby Green during Monday's solemn remembrance ceremony.

Derby Fire Chief Michael F. Gloade said the tragic events of 9/11 inspired him to become a firefighter.

These are just some of those who braved a thunderstorm and heavy rain to attend the half-hour program.

A granite bench dedicated to veterans of the War on Terror was unveiled. It is located next to the 9/11 memorial on the Green.
