Bethany Farm and Nursery in Woodbridge to host Christmas Market

Calling all makers, artists, crafters, and builders!

We are so excited to announce our very first Winter Holiday Market at Bethany Farm and Nursery!

For three Saturdays in a row, beginning Saturday, December 7, we will be hosting a wonderful winter market for our community!  

Bethany Farm and Nursery is located at 229 Seymour Road, Woodbridge.

Our market will be held indoors in our heated retail shop. We will have @just2galsmobilebartenders here making holiday-inspired cocktail and mocktails, hot cocoa, coffee, hot cider, and more!!

To the general public: We hope you will join us this holiday season! 

The farm will be selling wreaths, Christmas trees, garland, and so much more! We will have a bonfire going throughout the day.

Pictures with Santa Claus will also be offered! Specific dates and time to be announced next week!

To spread additional Christmas cheer, we will be transforming our retail shop into a winter wonderland, full of local makers, creators, small businesses, and artists selling their wonderful goods for the holiday.

Seymour Fire Department, Santa ready for Popcorn Ball Sunday fun

SEYMOUR- It’s that time of the year again!

When you hear sirens coming down your street on Dec. 22, be sure to come outside for popcorn balls and a visit from Santa!

Crews accompanied by Santa will hit the road at 8 a.m. and make their way down every street in Seymour throughout the morning.

From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Naugatuck River history

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a photo of the Naugatuck River as it goes under the Route 34 bridge and alongside Downtown Derby.

The Naugatuck River proper starts in Torrington where its east and west branches meet.

The total length is 40.2 miles, and the river empties into the Housatonic River at Derby. “Naugatuck” is derived from an Algonquian term that means “lone tree by the fishing place.” Originally, the Native Americans used the river’s abundant food source.

Since the 19th century, the Naugatuck River has had a long history of industry using the water for washing and power generation.

Due to this industry, the river suffered great damage by 1915 that wasn't improved upon until the early 1970’s. With the help of the DEP and the Valley community, progress has been made towards the river’s restoration.

Passageways have been constructed at the dams along the river. Having made great strides with cleanup efforts, the return of fish is now quite apparent. This can be seen on any given day in the spring and summer along the Derby Greenway. Bald eagles and osprey can be spotted in the trees along the river, as well as nests from our aquatic birds that dot the edge.
