'Turnback Tuesday' features Derby Savings Bank history

Turnback Tuesday looks at the Derby Savings Bank, which started operations in 1846 at 168 Main St., Derby. 

Eleven years later, it moved to the corner of Main and Caroline Streets, where it operated until 1923. Then the bank moved to the corner of Main and Olivia Streets. 

The final location in 1976 was at the corner of Main and Elizabeth Streets, where Derby City Hall is today.

The image is a coin bank given to customers to help them save their hard-earned change under lock and key. It was also used a form of advertising.

'Turnback Tuesday' memory from this date 7 years ago of 'Derby Bank'

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a photo of the original Derby Bank.

Although Derby "Savings" Bank is more well known, it was not the first bank in Derby.

The original bank - known simply as "Derby Bank" - opened in 1809, fittingly on Bank Street, facing Jennings Lane. (Note: Derby Savings Bank didn't open until 1846.)

Derby Bank was initially established in order to manage the profits brought in by the Derby Fishing Company.

In fact, the two institutions were so closely linked that when the fishing company ultimately failed in 1815, Derby Bank closed down as well. The Bank did re-opened briefly in 1824, but dissolved the following year.

Turnback Tuesday takes a rare look at the inside of the Derby Savings Bank, 163 Main Street (images taken 1893.)

The first [top] image looks in from the front entrance. The tellers’ windows are to the right in the back, with the safe located in the back left.

The second image is looking from overhead of the tellers' windows.

The big doors to the left are the front entrance, and the safe is around the wall to the right. William E. Downs was President, David Torrance, Vice President, and Thomas S. Birdseye, Secretary & Treasurer.

'Turnback Tuesday' features Derby Savings Bank

Turnback Tuesday visits Derby Savings Bank.

The Bank started in 1846 at 168 Main St., and then 11 years later moved to the corner of Caroline and Main streets on the second floor. 
It purchased that property and rebuilt, staying until 1923 when they purchased a new facility on the corner of Olivia and Main streets. 
In 1976, it moved again to another new building, this one on the corner of Elizabeth and Main streets (shown). 
This was its final location until it was later purchased by Webster Bank. 
This building is now the home of Derby City Hall.
