Klarides-Ditria warns pet owners to be aware of hot asphalt dangers

State Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria says with hot temperatures here for the summer it’s important to be prepared, and that includes making sure your cats and dogs are safe, too. 

Don't let cats or dogs outside without supervision or without checking the asphalt first.

The American Red Cross has the following tips on keeping pets safe, but essentially treat your pets the same as you treat yourself:

• Never leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees even with the windows cracked open.
• Limit exercise on hot days. Exercise in the early morning or evening hours.
• Walk your pet in the grass if possible, to avoid hot surfaces burning their paws.
• If your pet is outside, make sure they have access to shade and plenty of cool water.
• Water safety is important for your furry friends. Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool—they aren’t all good swimmers
• Watch your pets at a backyard barbecue. Keep them away from the grill and know that some food can be poisonous to them. Avoid raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and products with artificial sweeteners.
• Heat stroke is a common problem for pets in the warmer weather. Dogs with short noses or snouts, like the boxer or bulldog, are especially prone to heat stroke, along with overweight pets, those with extremely thick fur coat or any pet with upper respiratory problems.
• Open windows or doors are a temptation for pets to try to get outside. Keep all doors and unscreened windows closed, and make sure screens are tightly secured. 

Some plants in your garden can be hazardous to animals. 

Visit the Animal Poison Control Center to find out which plants and flowers are poisonous to animals.

Ansonia Police: Purse thefts reported at 2 gas stations

ANSONIA -  Ansonia Police Department has investigated two reports of purses being stolen from cars as their owners pumped gas.

This information was posted at 2:31 p.m. Monday on the department's Facebook page.

Anyone pumping gas should lock their car doors and be aware of their surroundings and anyone hanging around the lot of the gas station.

The incidents happened at the Shell Station on Great Hill Road and Stop and Shop on Division Street.

A suspect vehicle is a gray Kia Sorrento, possibly stolen out of Stratford today.

It’s National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

During these times of physical distancing, it may be harder to notice warning signs of suicide.

Some signs you can look for:

• No longer responding to calls and texts

• Changes in tone or language when talking, texting, or posting online

• Changes in the frequency and type of content shared online

• Changes in energy levels or appetite

• Increased use of drugs or alcohol

Ansonia Police: Stranger tells 2 girls to get into SUV in AMS parking lot

Girls unharmed; suspect sought

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Police Department investigated a suspicious person complaint at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday on Day Street in the Ansonia Middle School parking lot. 

Two juvenile females, ages 11 and 12, were walking in the parking lot of the middle school when they were approached by a black vehicle being driven by a black male who told the females several times to get into his vehicle. The juveniles ran from the scene and the suspect fled. 
The vehicle is described as a black smaller SUV with the rear windows tinted and the driver was a black male wearing a red hat and red shirt with gold rim glasses.

Derby PD shares winter storm warning tips

Snow is expected tomorrow (WED 07 MAR) starting early in the morning and increasing throughout the day. 

This is expected to be a “heavy” snow (weight-wise) with high wind gusts, which could increase the potential for downed trees/power lines and resulting power outages. Please prepare accordingly. 

If you encounter any power outages please contact your local utility provider, not 911. The UI Co. can be reached at (800) 722-5584. 

The following are some friendly snow-related tips and reminders:

Derby Winter Parking Ban is still in effect – parking is only allowed on the ODD side of the streets. You risk being ticketed and towed if plow vehicles cannot get through and adequately clear the roadway. Per Mayor Dziekan's office, FREE PARKING is available at the parking garage downtown Tuesday into Wednesday for anyone who wants to get their vehicle off the street.

Local ordinance requires that all homeowners/ businesses remove snow and ice from their sidewalks. Please be courteous to those that must travel by foot by making the sidewalks passable. You are also prohibited from throwing/shoveling the snow into the roadway. Both of these actions subject you to a $75 fine.

If you must travel, please exercise caution! Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destinations and always keep extra distance between yourself and other vehicles as stopping distances will be increased due to slippery road surfaces. 

Lastly, please remove ALL snow and ice from your entire vehicle (hood, trunk, and roof) before heading out. Operating an igloo that poses a threat to other drivers is a violation of Connecticut General Statute and is a $120 infraction. 

The fine increases to $200 and above if snow/ice becomes dislodged and causes damage to other vehicles.

Ansonia Police warn residents of phone scam

ANSONIA - On Jan. 21 the Ansonia Police Department investigated a phone scam where a local resident received a phone call from an unknown person reporting that a family member had been kidnapped, that a ransom was being requested and the kidnapped family member would be harmed if the police were contacted.

The Ansonia Police Department is warning all residents not to give any personal information, bank information, wire money, or purchase gift cards like iTunes, Amazon, Google and other easily negotiable monetary items to pay the person requesting the money.

If you receive a call like this, or that a relative has been arrested and needs bond money or has been injured and needs money for medical expenses, the first thing you should do is to try and contact the relative they are saying is in trouble. 
You should then contact the police department and report the incident.
