'Turnback Tuesday' features opening of time capsule from 1976

Turnback Tuesday has a special treat today.

On June 24, 2026 Bradley School in Derby opened a Time Capsule that was created by John Ogle’s fifth grade class in 1976.

It was a beautiful day attended by John’s family, many students from the school, and from the community. Dr. Matthew Conway was master of ceremonies with Mayor Joseph DiMartino greeting all who attended.

John’s wife Linda did the honors of opening and showcasing what was inside. Linda was heard saying she was afraid that John had played a trick and snakes in a can would pop out. John Ogle was a teacher and basketball coach for the Derby Public Schools for 37 years.

The items retrieved from the Time Capsule are on display at Derby Public Library at the main Circulation Desk through the summer.

Derby Public Library displays items from 1975 time capsule

DERBY - As we [at Derby Public Library] continue to celebrate Derby's 350th Anniversary we are displaying items from the 1975 Time Capsule.

These items are for all to see! Stop by to see this historic display!

Turnback Tuesday visits Derby’s 300th celebration of June, 1975. These photos of the burial of the Tercentennial Time Capsule were taken on the last day of the celebration: Sunday June 8, 1975 at 10 a.m.

Valerie Wasilewski, who was on the Executive Board Publicity Division for the celebration, is pictured here with Daniel Saccu. They're adding all the letters contributed by Derby residents to the capsule.

The Valley Monument Works donated the stone placed over the capsule which reads “Derby Tercentennial Time Capsule Buried 1975 – Reopen 2025.”

Just imagine what stories or memories have been waiting to be retold.

Derby Elks open time capsule from 1915

Derby resident George Kurtyka, a 25-year member of the Elks, holds a time capsule from 1915 on Saturday moments after it was taken out of the cornerstone of the Elks Lodge building at 73 Elizabeth St., Derby.
