Lawmakers collect clothes for veterans at care center in West Haven

WEST HAVEN - State Reps. Themis Klarides, Nicole Klarides-Ditria, and Charles Ferraro concluded their annual Veterans Donation Drive Dec. 23 by visiting the Errera Community Care Center in West Haven to drop off collected items for area veterans and their families.

Klarides said, “It is a privilege to be able to make a difference in the lives of people who have served our community and state in such a selfless manner. I want to thank the people who played a role in this effort that touches so many.’’

“We appreciate the overwhelming support from residents that helped us collect much-needed items for our local veterans,” Klarides-Ditria said. “We want to make sure that area veterans get the necessary resources they need and don’t go without clothes and comfort items during the winter months and holidays.”

“The Errera Community Care Center does an incredible job supporting our local veterans and I am glad that we were able to help assist them in their efforts,” said Ferraro. “We couldn’t do this without the many residents who donated items and I want to thank them for making this a successful drive for our veterans.”

The items collected included winter jackets, winter hats, gloves, comfort items, and games. The lawmakers had drop-off locations in Derby and West Haven, where the collection bins were overflowing with items.

Ansonia Police offer Myrtle Avenue shooting update

Sharing from the Ansonia Police Department release late Friday morning: 

"This press release is to provide preliminary information regarding the fatal officer involved shooting that occurred on January 2, 2020. This information is the best information available at this time. Please remember that this investigation is ongoing and preliminary information is subject to change. However, in keeping with our goal of transparency, it is important for us to share this information with the public.

"On January 2, 2020 at 7:35 pm Ansonia Police received a walk-in complaint from a female who reported that her boyfriend, who had become physically aggressive, was at the residence in violation of a full no contact protective order. Officers went to 81 Myrtle Avenue to speak to the male and to take him into custody for violation of a Protective Order. The Protective Order was issued on November 18, 2019 following a November 16 Domestic Violence Arrest with the same female.

"During the course of the investigation officers entered the house and were confronted by the unwanted male brandishing a knife. Officers attempted to verbally de-escalate the situation and the male retreated further into the house. The officers continued to try get the male to comply with orders to drop the knife. The male refused to drop the knife and officers deployed a Taser, which had no effect as the male advanced toward them. The male then ran toward officers with the knife in hand. Officers made every attempt to create distance between themselves and the unwanted male/subject.

"An officer on scene then discharged at least one round from his firearm, striking the male.

"Officers were then able to disarm the male, rendered immediate medical assistance and Ansonia Rescue and Medical Service transported the male to Griffin Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

"The CT State Police and the Danbury State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky were called to investigate the shooting and the case has been turned over to the CT State Police Western District Major Crime Squad.

"Fortunately, Ansonia Police officers are equipped with body-worn cameras. The videos have been supplied to the CT State Police and will be released as soon as possible.

"All further press releases and requests for information will be handled by the CT State Police.

"We trust that this shooting will be properly investigated and we will wait for a finding from the State’s Attorney’s office."

Ansonia Parks & Rec to offer free ice fishing class at Armory

ANSONIA - A free ice fishing class is being offered by the Parks & Recreation Department on Jan. 30.

The class is taught by certified instructors from the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection C.A.R.E. Program.
C.A.R.E. is an acronym for Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education.
These instructors are fishermen who volunteer to share their experience and expertise with anyone wanting to learn.
The classroom instruction will take place at the Ansonia Armory from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 30.

The classroom instruction covers the basics of the equipment, safety, dress, rules and regulations, and species identification. Participants then have an opportunities to actually practice what was covered in the classroom session.

Ansonia Police report officer-involved shooting

ANSONIA - Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said this morning in a prepared release: "On January 2, 2020 at about 8:00 p.m., while investigating a domestic violence incident at 81 Myrtle Avenue, there was an officer involved shooting when officers from the Ansonia Police Department were confronted by the suspect who was armed with a knife. 

There will be a press conference today, 1/3/2020, at 11:00 a.m. at Ansonia City Hall to release more information regarding the investigation."
