Derby Public Library reminds public seed library is up and running

A reminder to our local gardeners that Derby's Seed Library is up and running!

Join our other Derby patrons who are growing gardens with Derby Public Library seeds. Find vegetable, flower, herb, and fruit seeds in our collection.

Also a reminder that returning seeds at the end of the growing season is not required but seed donations are always welcome!

The Library is at 313 Elizabeth St., Derby.

SHELTON - The Shelton Seed Library reopens for the 2025 season THIS Saturday, Feb. 1 at Plumb Memorial Library, 65 Wooster St. All seeds are free to the public, limit 3 seed packets per person.

The Shelton Seed Library is managed by the Olde Ripton Garden Club in partnership with the Shelton Library System.

Shelton Historical Society to hold annual meeting Sunday

UPDATED: Our event will now start an hour later at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26 instead of the original 1 p.m. start time.

Refreshments will be provided after the brief business meeting and presentation conclude.

Our speaker Marie Hayes will discuss Victorian Gardening and will have a small display of gardening memorabilia.

Quinnipiac students clean up garden site behind Salvation Army HQ in Ansonia

 

ANSONIA - Quinnipiac University students recently cleared brush and prepared raised boxes at the community garden located behind Salvation Army headquarters in Ansonia.

Registration opens Monday for Ansonia Nature Center Junior Rangers

Thursdays, Sept. 14 - Nov. 2, 3:30-5 p.m. ANSONIA - Calling all 11 to 14 years old who love nature!  Does your child want to work with animals, garden for conservation, help maintain our trails, assist with community service projects, and help with special events?  This is the opportunity to help the Ansonia Nature Center in our 8-week after-school program.  Parental permission is required. SHELTON - Ready to lend Shelton History Center a helping hand?

Join us this Saturday for our annual site cleanup! The Center is at 70 Ripton Road.

It takes a lot of work to keep our grounds beautiful, so grab a rake, some gardening gloves, and a friend and join us from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to beautify our grounds!

Massaro Community Farm slates 8-week Ansonia After School Program

WOODBRIDGE - Massaro Farm's Ansonia After School Program for grades 1-6 starts Wednesday, March 29 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. There is still room to sign up your student!

Farm after school programs allow your child to have a hands on experience here at Massaro Community Farm. 

Participants spend time getting our garden beds ready for sowing, planting seeds and seedlings, caring for chickens, exploring the nature trail, learning basic survival skills and other fun and educational activities.

The farm is at 41 Ford Road.

Derby Public Library to host presentation on gardening Wednesday

DERBY - Seed Starting & Composting will be presented by Massaro Community Farm of Woodbridge at 6:30 p.m. this Wednesday at Derby Public Library.

The presentation is for all ages.

Unravel the mysteries of gardening during this informative session, taught by Advanced Certified Master Gardener Rachel Ziesk, who has been teaching gardening classes for over 10 years.

Learn about seed starting - what to start indoors, direct seed outdoors, or plant in the fall - and the basics of composting.

You can practice these skills later in the free community garden located on the Caroline Street side of the Library!

Seymour Public Library to host lecture by avid gardener

SEYMOUR - Seymour Public Library will host a free, in-person lecture, Maximizing Space in the Garden - Creating More of a Good Thing by Tovah Martin at 1 p.m. March 11.

No matter if you're gardening in a close-knit neighborhood or a vast area, you want to garden efficiently, prolifically, sustainably, and beautifully. This lecture focuses on all the points on your checklist.

Martin is an avid gardener and the author of many gardening books.

She has appeared on numerous television shows including the Martha Stewart show, a PBS television series, and the CBS Sunday Early Show.
