'Turnback Tuesday' highlights history of Derby Lodge of Elks

Turnback Tuesday admires another old and useful building in Derby, the “Derby Lodge of Elks.”
The Derby Elks No. 571 was started in April, 1900 by a small group of citizens.
When enough funds were saved, the Elks purchased the property on Elizabeth Street on Feb. 15, 1915. Ground was broken that September and the cornerstone ceremony was held on Dec. 8, 1915.
The dedication of the Elks' new home was held on Feb. 21, 1917 with much fanfare.
The Lodge is still used today at 73 Elizabeth St., Derby.

*Thanks as always to the staff of Derby Public Library for sharing interesting local history each week!
