Griffin Hospital in Derby recognizes nurses in 35th annual celebration

DERBY - Griffin Hospital recently held its 35th annual Nurses' Week Celebration to honor its more than 480 staff nurses.
Nursing Department staff members were treated to refreshments, gifts, raffles, and award presentations to nurses who provided exceptional care during the year.
“Nurses are recognized as the 'most trusted profession,' and I have witnessed our Griffin nurses respond to challenging times and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic with expertise and compassion," said Griffin Vice President of Patient Care Kimberlee Richard. “You continually demonstrate your commitment to our patients and their families. I am so incredibly grateful for all that you do. You are and will always be leaders in patient care.”
Susan Rupar, RN, of Oxford, a nurse in the Griffin Hospital Emergency Department, received the 2023 Outstanding Nurse of the Year Award.
A caregiver at Griffin since 2016, Rupar has long been recognized as an outstanding nurse by patients, new caregivers, and Griffin leadership, and as a vital member of the Griffin ED team.
“During a leadership transition period in the ED, Sue has been acting as interim educator, mentor and supporter, as well as transition coach for new hires,” the nomination for Rupar stated. “Sue has gone above and beyond to support the team during this time. Sue treats every person like they are all that matters in the moment. She has helped create new ways for staff recognition to remind the team that we are all here to support each other, make everyone’s day better, and to smile.”

Shelton Police post street closings before tonight's fireworks

The annual Shelton-Derby Fireworks are scheduled for tonight, Friday, June 30 at the Riverwalk on Canal Street.
Howe Avenue, including all side roads, between Wharf Street and Center Street will be closed at 7:30 p.m.
Canal Street between Wharf Street and Hill Street will be closed at approximately 2 p.m..
Canal Street between Hill Street and Cornell Street will be closed at 5:30 p.m.
Derby Police post parking ban today for fireworks viewing

DERBY - There is a parking ban in effect this evening on Elizabeth Street between Main Street and Sixth Street from 4 p.m. until midnight to allow for viewing of the fireworks.
Violators will be towed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
American Legion Post 50 to host Legion Liftoff in Ansonia to celebrate July 4th
ANSONIA - The Gordon-Visselli American Legion Post 50 will once again be hosting the Legion Liftoff to celebrate Independence Day.
More than 30 model rockets will be launched July 4th, from 10-11:30 a.m. at Nelligan Park on Doyle Drive.
This is a free event. Commander Mike Heise invites you to bring blankets and lawn chairs (there is some limited bleacher seating also) and take in the excitement during this family fun event.
Kids will be invited to retrieve rockets as they parachute down and may get a chance to actually push the launch buttons. There will be other interactive opportunities that will add to the fun.
If you have a rocket of your own, bring it along to launch it sky high.
