'Turnback Tuesday' features downtown Derby store

Turnback Tuesday is sharing another business: Carroll Cut Rate Store. 
The business first opened up in Ansonia in 1928 then opened a second location in Derby at 200 Main St. in 1934. 
In 1936, the Derby store moved to 286 Main St. 
The Ansonia store closed by 1940 and the Derby store did the same by 1961. Carroll Cut Rate Store provided toilet preparations and perfumes, but later changed to cosmetics. This picture shows the store on the right side while it was at the 238 Main St. location.

Valley United Way seeks volunteers

The Valley Food Task Force, a Committee of the Valley Health and Human Services Council founded in 1993, is partnering with End Hunger Connecticut to provide lunch to Valley school children ages 5 to 18 to replace the free lunch they would normally receive during the school year. 

The Valley United Way will lead the charge with volunteers as this initiative aligns with their mission for tackling food insecurity for individuals and families. 
A “Power Hour” free lunch will be available daily Monday through Friday at the following locations:

Christ Episcopal Church, 56 South Cliff St., Ansonia, from June 17 to Aug. 23 from 12-12:45 p.m. 

Derby Veteran’s Community Center, 35 Fifth St., Derby, from June 17 to Aug. 23 from 12- 12:45 p.m.

Good Shepherd Church, 182 Coram Ave., Shelton, from June 17 to Aug. 23 from 12-12:45 p.m.

The Salvation Army, 26 Lester St., Ansonia, from June 17 to Aug. 23 from 12-12:45 p.m.

The Summer Meals Program meets federal nutrition and USDA Agricultural guidelines. Lunches are comprised of milk, fruits, grains, vegetables, meat, or another protein.

The Valley United Way Volunteer Center is coordinating volunteers from their Youth Leaders Program, local corporations and the community to be on-site daily at each location to help set up, serve meals, provide positive interaction with the students, and clean-up.
