Sharing 2017 'Turnback Tuesday' memory featuring Flood of '55 in Derby

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a photo of the drive-in movie theater during the 1955 flood. It was located at 20 Division St. in Derby, where McDonald's and BJ's Wholesale Club now reside.

The theater had opened in July of 1953 and thus was only open two years before the flood occurred.

After the flood, the screen and concession stand were repaired and they remained in operation until the 1960s.

Note: In a comment on this post six years ago, David Lenart of Derby said he believed this photo was from the October flood. The first flood was on Aug. 19, 1955 and the second one was on Oct. 16.

Lenart is the grandson of the late Evening Sentinel photographer Edward J. Cotter Jr., who took this incredible photo.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

Ansonia police officer suffers minor injuries investigating suspicious person

ANSONIA - An Ansonia patrol officer today investigated a suspicious person at about noon in the area of Lester and High Streets, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a release.

The suspicious party entered the yard of a home on Lester Street and went around the back of the house.
When the officer went to the rear of the home looking for the male he was confronted by a German shepherd that resided at the home.
The officer attempted to back out of the yard but stumbled as the dog came towards him. Several shots were fired at the dog and thankfully the dog was not hit by any of the shots, police said.

The officer suffered minor injuries in his attempt to elude the dog. The suspicious male was found in the backyard and advised officers on scene he was just cutting through the yard to get to another location.

This is a press release from Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch.

History of Hollywood in the '50s program slated at Plumb Memorial Library in Shelton

SHELTON - Plumb Memorial Library will host 'I Love Lucy or I Love the Movies: How Hollywood Fought Back in the 1950s' at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28.

Television in the 1950s was making inroads into movie theater attendance.
Hollywood started to fight back doing things that couldn’t be duplicated on the small screen by launching new filming techniques.

The most profound process was Cinerama which was introduced in 1953 with a huge curved screen and brand new “stereophonic” sound. Then came 3D Natural Vision and shortly thereafter wide screen CinemaScope and CinemaScope 55. VistaVision took a different tack and master showman Mike Todd came up with wide screen Todd-AO.

The presentation will cover how each process worked, benefits and pitfalls of each, and their impact on today’s theater productions. There will be visual examples of each.

The Library is at 65 Wooster St.
