'Turnback Tuesday' features Housatonic River Dam
This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features the Housatonic River Dam. The Housatonic Water Co. was organized in 1866 for the purpose of erecting a dam across the river. The dam was built in 1870 near the present-day Yale Boathouse.
A short canal was built on the Derby side while a much longer canal was built on the Huntington side that later became Shelton.
On Jan. 21, 1891, the dam burst from damage wrought by freshets and ice blocks. Even after it was rebuilt, ice and heavy water flows continued to damage the Housatonic River Dam until the Stevenson Dam was built upriver in Monroe in 1918.

Learn to create healthy salsas at Derby Public Library presentation
DERBY - The Derby Public Library will host Salsa: Sweet and Savory Flavors to Get You Dancing at 6:30 p.m. June 19.
Alissa Monteleone, author of EveryBody Eats and owner of Simply Good Thinking, will discuss the healthy advantages of homemade salsas made with antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables.

Participants, ages 18 and over, will have the opportunity to experiment with new flavor combinations, both sweet and savory, and then taste their creations.

'To sleep, perchance to dream - ay, there's the rub' - W. Shakespeare
Another night, another lack of proper sleep.
I blame all the anti-rejection and anti-infection medications I'm taking after my kidney transplant from upsetting my normal sleep pattern.
Fingers crossed it will settle down soon.
It was suggested I try using a melatonin supplement to help in the sleeping department.
Another pill to take! Yikes. But I'll give it a try.
This lack of sleep reminds me very much of living with a newborn who wakes up every two hours or so during the night.
I remember those tiring times well, and I'm sure many other parents reading this do too.

Boys & Girls Club 'crew' named starters for Commodore Hull 5K race
SHELTON - The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has announced the Commodore Hull “crew” members have been named official
starters for the 2017 Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5K Road Race.
The Boys & Girls Club, long-time beneficiary of the race, officially took over production of the 5K this year.
Most of the crew hail from Derby High School: Jack Walsh (1964); Nick and Diana
Serednitsky (1969); Glenn Gaetano, Dave Grant, and John Saccu (1970); and
Markanthony Izzo (1976). Shelton High School alum include Pam Petro and John
Pawlowski (1981) and Carl Sylvester (1951). Tom Wilson (1981) and Laura Wilson
(1984) represent St. Joseph’s High School, and Vera Gaetano (1979) attended Byron-Bergen High School in New York.
The crew has great pride in the Valley, and it was a natural choice to tap them as the starters of this year’s race. For the past 15 years, these volunteers have worked nearly year round to ensure the success of the 5K, which has become a noted and looked-for Valley event every Thanksgiving.
The popularity of the race spurred the organizers to expand the number of timed runners several times; the current cap is 750.

DERBY - The Derby Public Library offers monthly Tech Time sessions.
Every third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and every third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. a staff member will be on hand to answer all your tech-related questions and concerns.
Whether you are having trouble downloading e-books, searching databases, completing on-line job applications,

The American Job Search Career Coach returns to the Derby Public Library June 16 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
During both the morning session, 10 a.m.-noon, and the afternoon session, 1-3 p.m., the instructor will be offering the class, Create a Great Resume.
Participants must attend a full session. The classes are free and open to the public.
Registration is requested but walk-ins will be welcomed on a first come, first served basis.

Knights of Columbus to host benefit dinner in Ansonia
Cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
Menu includes homemade meatless lasagna, meatballs, sausage, garlic bread, salad, dessert, coffee, tea, and soda. BYOB.
