Griffin Health to offer free diabetes self-management program in September
The Griffin Center for Healthy Living is hosting two sessions of its free diabetes self-management program in September to help empower individuals to improve their well-being.
Living Healthy with Diabetes is a free, six-week diabetes self-management program that engages participants in learning and discussing clinical and lifestyle self-management behaviors to improve their health, blood sugars, emotional wellness, and quality of life.
The program integrates trusted information from the National Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes and The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Curriculum to empower individuals diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to manage their health and well-being.
There will be a session on Tuesdays Sept. 23 and 30, and Oct. 7, 14, and 28, and Nov. 4 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Griffin Health Center for Healthy Living, Quarry Rock, 300 Oxford Road, and on Thursdays Sept. 25, and Oct. 2, 9, 16, and 30, and Nov. 6 from 1:30-3 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., Derby.
At weekly meetings, Community Wellness Facilitator Carolyn Gundell, MS, CDCES, will guide participants to manage their well-being with insightful education on healthy eating, weight management, physical activity, medication, glucose technology, health-related risk management, and coping with a chronic condition.
This free wellness program is part of Griffin’s commitment to improve community wellness through free education, guidance and assistance in preventing and managing chronic disease. Griffin’s mission is to empower individuals to make choices that change their lifestyles for the better, and to go beyond caring for individuals when they are not well by building a meaningful relationship, guiding, and coaching them to maximize their quality of life.

Derby Neck Library offers new clubs for music, arts
DERBY - This post is about two new clubs for school-aged kids and tweens meeting on alternating Mondays. You're welcome to join one, both, or neither.
No registration is necessary and members may drop in on whichever days they are available.
First and Third Mondays of the month: Monday Melodies, a club for aspiring musicians. You are welcome to bring your own instrument or use the guitars, ukuleles, and percussion instruments provided by the library.
Beginners are welcome as well as experienced players, or just come to sing, shake a maraca, or enjoy the general vibe. Each week, we'll review a few basic chords and then jam out on songs that use those chords.
Second and Fourth Mondays of the month: Monday Masterpieces, a club for aspiring creators. This club is for kids with a passion for drawing, writing, film, acting, building, or any other creative endeavor to meet with other like-minded individuals in a collaborative space.
We'll have creative prompts and activities to help inspire and practice, but the long-term goal is to have regular attendees who dream up long-term project ideas and then bring them to life.
We hope to see you there!
The Library is at 307 Hawthorne Ave.
