Griffin Hospital in Derby to host health insurance presentation


DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host a free program on navigating Medicare and health insurance through the state health care exchange at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at the hospital, 130 Division St.
“Get Health Insurance and Get the Most Out of It” will feature Joe Deegan, a counselor for Connecticut’s programs for Health Insurance, Outreach, Information and Eligibility Screening (CHOICES), Certified Health Insurance Assisters Margaret Sessa, RN, and Esther Jones, and a medical expert from Griffin Faculty Practice.

Deegan will provide information to help those eligible for Medicare and their caregivers make informed health insurance decisions. 
The presentation will cover Medicare, Medigap, and Medicare Savings Program (CT Assistance).
Griffin’s Certified Health Insurance Assisters will provide information on navigating Access Health CT, the state’s health insurance exchange, and signing up for Medicaid. 

They also will be available to make appointments for one-on-one health insurance enrollment assistance.
A member of Griffin’s Faculty Practice will discuss the benefits of establishing a “medical home” with a primary care physician, which can help individuals manage their health and save money.

This talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U program, a series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics. 
Light refreshments will be served.

Volunteer for Project FeederWatch at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby


DERBY - Kellogg Environmental Center is seeking volunteers for its Project FeederWatch program.  
Volunteers are expected to monitor, count, and maintain the bird feeding stations at the Kellogg Environmental Center from November 2016 through March 2017, on Fridays and Saturdays.  
Come to the Center from 9-10:30 a.m. Oct. 29 to attend a Project FeederWatch training. 

Project FeederWatch is a nationwide research effort that monitors the distribution and populations of winter bird species such as house finches, goldfinches, downy woodpeckers, and black-capped chickadees across the country.  
Volunteers monitor and count the number of birds that are using the Center’s bird feeders during pre-selected days between November and March.  
The data is carefully recorded and entered online at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for compilation, analysis, and publication.  
This citizen science project is well suited for individuals including students, teachers, retired individuals, and those who have an interest in birds or enjoy watching wildlife. 

All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by adults.  The training is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.

Valley Community Foundation launches community index

Sharon Closius, President and CEO, Valley Community Foundation, leads a panel discussion Thursday morning at the official launch of a 60-page community index, Understanding the Valley Region, at the R.D. Scinto Auditorium in Shelton. More than 170 people attended the launch.
