'Turnback Tuesday' highlights history of ice skating

Turnback Tuesday looks at ice skating. It is suggested the earliest ice skating started in Finland more than 3,000 years ago.

Popularity increased and recreational skating took hold by the 15th century. When local waters froze, adults and children would strap on skates and enjoy themselves. It was a time to socialize with neighbors and friends.

This watercolor shows folks of Derby doing just that more than 125 years ago at the dam on the Housatonic River.

Thanks goes to Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

Quick update: Car found, fortunately it's fixable

I meant to update Friday's post about my car being stolen on New Year's Eve: happy to report the police located it in New Haven.

It also was found in the Elm City back in July, the first time it was stolen. And today I found out damage was estimated at about $2,500 - at least it's fixable.

I want to publicly thank Ansonia and New Haven police officers for their quick work!

Although 2026 got off to a rocky start, fingers crossed the new year is a peaceful one for all who are reading this.
