Trinity Episcopal Church in Seymour to collect household item donations

NEWS!!! This is a BIG ONE!

We have been receiving many calls from people wanting to donate household items to people impacted by the flood - so many homes need to replace ALL of their belongings. So, our friends at Trinity Episcopal Church of Seymour have offered to accept these items, organize them, and open up their doors to anyone who is in need.

Monday, Aug. 26 through Thursday, Aug. 29
9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Used items and gently worn clothing accepted, anything NEW even better! (Think towels, sheets, toiletries, kitchenware, etc).

Do you want to volunteer to help sort through and display the donated items? Email lmckenzie@teaminc.org

'Turnback Tuesday' features furniture store in downtown Derby

Turnback Tuesday takes a look at the Lee Brothers Furniture at 57 Elizabeth St., Derby.

The Lees were the successors to D & S Champlain Inc., changing it to Lee Brothers in 1930, specializing over the years in furniture, floor coverings, bedding, appliances, and oil heaters.

The Lees ran a successful business until 1965. The building has long been removed, but it would have been located at the corner of what is now Elizabeth and 3rd Streets. The gentleman in the foreground is Officer Edward (Eddy) Slezak.

This photo is from 1955.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

It was started some time before 1872 by Stephen N. Summers & Levi C. Lewis. They operated a successful business until Levi Lewis passed away in 1882. Stephen changed the name to S. N. Summers’ until his passing in 1884.

This picture is of Stephen’s business/calling card. It measures 3 ¼” x 2 7/8”.

SEYMOUR - A new gift shop, “The Odd Piece,”  opened last week at 161 Main St. in the downtown antiques district.
Proprietors Kathleen Benedetto and Bernadette Pandolfe “upcycle,” or re-purpose, vintage collectibles.

They create custom shadow boxes for customers needing a way to display their collections dust-free. A multitude of shadow boxes is displayed along a long wall.

Our thanks to Seymour resident Joe Luciano for contributing this story and photos.
