DETAILS: Love learning? Help visitors connect with the past at Shelton History Center.  Become part tour guide -- part teacher -- part ambassador by attending sessions to learn Shelton’s history and how to share it with families and students. 

                 We welcome enthusiastic individuals with a little time to spare during the day for facilitating enrichment programs for school groups or on occasional weekends for special events.  No experience necessary. Sessions will be ongoing and flexible. 

                 Free membership for one year to Shelton Historical Society will be included upon completion of training.

Guided Tours

The Museum will be offering self-guided tours and docent-led guided tours.  

Self-guided tours will allow guests to experience the museum on their own. Docents will be present to answer questions and direct traffic flow.  Registration is required to maintain safe capacity limits. 

Register for a self-guided tour by calling 203-734-2513 or emailing DEEP.Kellogg@ct.gov. Walk-in registrations are accepted. The museum is at 500 Hawthorne Ave., Derby.

Docent-led guided tours will allow guests to experience the museum with a trained tour guide or docent. Docent-led guided tours will be offered on a limited basis to ensure guests’ safety and to maintain safe capacity limits. 

Docent-led tours require advanced registration. To register for a docent-led tour and check availability, call 203-734-2513 or email DEEP.Kellogg@ct.gov. 

Twilight Tours are self-guided tours during the twilight and evening times on Fridays from 4-7 p.m. No registration is required for Twilight Tours. 

Many wonderful clubs and decorators contributed to this year's holiday festivities. 

They include:  Derby Garden Society, Garden Club of Orange, Long Hill Garden Club, Naugatuck Garden Club, Olde Ripton Garden Club of Shelton, Garden Club of Woodbridge, Valley Arts Council, Women Redefining Retirement from Milford, and Ye Olde Kellogg Garden Club.

DEEP facilities to host 'Valley Views of 1902' presentation Saturday in Derby

DERBY - The Osborne Homestead Museum and Kellogg Environmental Center will host a  presentation, “Valley Views of 1902,” at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28.  

 

In 1902, Naugatuck River Valley Area residents and most likely Frances Osborne Kellogg, an amateur photographer, collected a series of photographs stored as fragile glass stereopticon slides.  

Due to advancements in digital technology these images can now be shared as a PowerPoint presentation. The slides celebrate everyday activities in the Lower Naugatuck Valley, with an emphasis on Derby.  

They highlight important buildings and people at work in fields, stopping at local businesses, bicycling in the park, and viewing the original Stevenson Dam (among other similar activities).   

 

Join docent Patricia Sweeney of the Osborne Homestead Museum in learning from this special archival collection of farm workers, young women, immigrants, and African Americans from 120 years ago.

Derby Historical Society hiring Docents for David Humphreys House in Ansonia

The Docent position is a seasonal job from October through December; March through June - up to three days per week. Applicants must be available during the scheduled semesters and classes.

Applicants should have the ability to work with children, be able to stand for four hours, walk one mile for the historic district tour along Elm Street in Ansonia, be able to lift 20 pounds, and have a love of history. If you are interested in becoming a Docent, please send a cover letter/resume for more information. The salary for the docent position is the current CT minimum wage. This is a seasonal job from October through December; March through May - up to three days per week.
 
Docent Requirements:
• Availability to attend training and work for the full Fall or Spring season
• Commit to a full school year (Fall and Spring Sessions) with the A Day in 1762 Program
• Be available to work a minimum of 4 Programs per month when class is in session

As a member of the Docent Program, Docents may expect:
• Clear explanation of responsibilities
• Opportunity to expand knowledge and understanding of colonial life and workshop skills
• In-depth education on Derby Colonial History from 1642 and on
• Evaluation of performance and pay raises
 
All staff docents are part-time, seasonal, hourly employees at will. As such, docents are not eligible for benefits; including, but not limited to, unemployment benefits. Employment is at the will of the employee and the Derby Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Derby Historical Society to host open house at Humphreys House in Ansonia

Docents are ready to welcome visitors. 

ANSONIA -The Derby Historical Society will hold an Open House from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 13 at the birthplace of General David Humphreys. 

He was a Revolutionary War aide de camp to General George Washington and served as our nation's first ambassador. 

The 1698 house is at 37 Elm St. Humphreys was born there in 1752.

Come and spark up a conversation with one of our docents and enjoy the warmth of the fire.You may also encounter local militiamen or soldiers hoping to recruit you for their ranks.

This event is suitable for children ages 1 to 115.
Free, but donations are appreciated.

Derby Historical Society to host 'Twelfth Night' celebration

"Please join us as the Derby Historical Society marks the end of the Christmas season with our annual Twelfth Night Celebration. 
"This event features tours of General David Humphreys House by costumed docents. Spark up a conversation with one of our historical actors and take yourself back to an earlier time in American history.
"Try our mulled cider and punch alongside some samplings of colonial cookery and modern day baked goods. There will be demonstrations of colonial skills such as spinning and weaving. 
"We will also have open hearth cooking demonstrations during this event and a Dickens' Reading at 3 p.m. in Lady Humphreys’ Parlor.
"Be sure to visit our Gift Shop to find that unique item. We have colonial toys, locally made candles, history books, and watercolor prints of Derby’s yesteryear.

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society will hold an open hearth cooking demonstration from 1-4 p.m. Nov.17 at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.   

Docents will prepare 18^th Century seasonal favorites over an open hearth.  
Enjoy a sample of these items and some modern day tastings with a cup of mulled cider.  
Stay for a tour of the house; the gift shop will also be open.

Suggested donation is $5.
Parking is available behind the house or on nearby Thomas Street.

Derby Historical Society slates events at Humphreys House in Ansonia

Learn local history June 9 at David Humphreys House in Ansonia

ANSONIA - Step back in time and join the Derby Historical Society for CT Open House Day June 9 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 

Enjoy a tour of the Gen. David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St., led by costumed docents. 
Walking tours of historic Elm Street may also be enjoyed, weather permitting. 
Colonial demonstrations of natural dyes and spinning will be displayed during this event. 

The Sixth CT Regiment will be at the Humphreys House demonstrating musket firing and drills throughout the event. 
Be sure to stop by the gift shop to find a unique gift or book. 
Admission is free; donations are much appreciated. 

Limited parking is available in the lot behind the Humphreys House, and on nearby Thomas Street.
