Derby Historical Society to release 'A Day in 1762' film, present Howe Award

The Gen. David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St., Ansonia

ANSONIA -  Derby Historical Society will present the release of its virtual “A Day in 1762”, which is celebrating its 40th-consecutive year, at 7 p.m. June 26. 

This film was created as a way to keep our little learners in touch with their colonial past. Come and join us for this exciting outdoor event at the Gen. David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.

The night’s event will begin with the presentation of the Dr. John Ireland Howe Award to Pat Tarasovic who earned the distinction for her years of service to the people of the Lower Naugatuck Valley.

Derby Historical Society hiring Docents for 'Day in 1762' program in Ansonia

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society is currently hiring Docents for its “A Day in 1762 Program” at the Gen. David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.

Applicants should have the ability to work with children and have the willingness to learn local history. 

If you are interested in becoming a Docent, please send a resume and letter of interest to info@derbyhistorical.org for more information.

This is a seasonal job from October through December; March through June - up to three days per week. Applicants must be available during the scheduled semesters and classes.

All Docents are part-time, seasonal, hourly employees.

Derby Historical Society to host virtual 'Day in 1762' program for 5th graders

ANSONIA  - The Derby Historical Society has announced its award-winning field trip, “A Day in 1762,” will be presented virtually for the first time in 40 years.

Students travel to colonial Derby for an insider’s look into the life of young David Humphreys, who later in life became aide-de-camp to George Washington during the Revolutionary War. 

This “Living History” experience takes place at the home of General David Humphreys, 37 Elm St., and is led by docents in period attire. There will be one-hour time slots available in March and April. 

Discussion about David’s life and achievements during the American Revolution and beyond are also part of this wonderful program. 

Fifth grade classes in the Valley towns of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton are invited to attend the spring 2021 session free of charge.

Executive Director Daniel L. Bosques said in a written statement, “Keeping young minds rooted in our local past means so much to us that we have developed a state of the art virtual field trip during what has been the most difficult of years for class trips. 

"This was made possible with the support of the Valley Community Foundation, our local municipalities, and the residents of the Lower Naugatuck Valley.”

The Derby Historical Society is currently booking class field trips for our 39th season of "A Day in 1762". Are you a teacher looking for the most fun and culturally enriching field trip in Connecticut? Look no further - we would
like to book your date for a field trip to the General David Humphreys House located at 37 Elm St. in Ansonia.

New to 2020, is a video experience titled “Lt. Colonel Humphreys… In His Words.” 

This new and exciting DVD will be offered to all of the visiting schools as supplemental curriculum at no additional cost! The video is a fast forward to 20-years later in 1782 detailing events that led to Humphreys becoming aide-de-camp to General Washington. 

A free DVD will be given for teachers to share with their class after visiting "A Day in 1762".

Available dates are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Classes are filling up quickly, and we don't want your students to miss out on this wonderful learning experience!
