ANSONIA - The Ansonia Rotary Club's first Restaurant Raffle is live!

Cost is $20 per entry for a chance at six prizes.

Ansonia Rotary Club awards scholarships to 2 Ansonia High graduates

Maliqa Mosley-Williams and Tyler Cafaro.

 ANSONIA - The Ansonia Rotary Club Tuesday  presented $500 checks to city scholars Maliqa Mosley-Williams and Tyler Cafaro. 

Both young adults graduated with distinction from Ansonia High School in June and will be attending college in the fall.

The scholarships were awarded based on their academic and social accomplishments. They and their family members were guests of the Club for lunch at CRAVE Restaurant.

Mayor David S. Cassetti was on hand to offer his congratulations. The meeting was the Club’s first in-person meeting since March, and meetings will be held bi-weekly going forward.

Ansonia Rotary Club beautifies downtown corner, supports food bank

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Rotary Club recently replanted flowers and groomed the bushes and shrubs at Haddad Park in downtown Ansonia at the corner of Bridge and Main Streets. 

The Club adopted the spot last year, and has been responsible for keeping it looking well ever since.

Club President Lori Veillette and Vice President Joe Pinto are leaders of the Ansonia Club, which recently donated $2,500 of groceries to the Samela Food Pantry at Christ Episcopal Church. 
Funds for the purchase were a grant from the Rotary District Foundation, and the delivery was arranged by Presidents David Morgan of TEAM, Inc. and Patrick Charmel of Griffin Hospital.

The Club also awarded its annual financial scholarship to two Ansonia High School graduating seniors: Tyler Cafaro and Maliqa Mosley-Williams. Each will receive a grant of $500.

The club meets at Crave Restaurant on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m.

Ansonia Rotary donates dictionaries to Assumption School 3rd graders

ANSONIA - Ansonia Rotary Club members John Yeager and Rich Knoll handed out personal dictionaries to Karen Clayton’s third grade class at Assumption School this week, completing the club’s annual contribution to local education. 

The club purchased dictionaries for all 200 of Ansonia’s third graders.  
Assumption staff and students welcomed the gift. They located the longest word in the English language in the books and attempted to pronounce it.  

The distribution of dictionaries at Assumption followed distributions at Mead and Prendergast elementary schools in the previous weeks. The effort was organized by Rotary Club member and Superintendent of Schools Carol Merlone and Club President Lori Veillette. 

The annual purchase and distribution is part of the Ansonia Rotary Club’s Community Services program.

Ansonia Rotary recognizes first responders at dinner

ANSONIA - More than 50 friends, family, and members of Ansonia’s Fire, Police and ARMS departments joined Ansonia Rotary Club members for dinner Tuesday to congratulate three outstanding public servants. 

The event was held at Ansonia High School.

The Fire Department outstanding service award went to Past Chief Scott Trembley, while the Ansonia Police Department award was presented to Officer Mark Clifford.  

The ARMS department selected EMT Travis Nelson for recognition. Each member was congratulated and presented a plaque by Rotary Club President Lori Veillette.  

Mayor David S. Cassetti and state Sen. George S. Logan presented awardees with citations from the city as well as the General Assembly, and commended them for their commitment to the safety of city residents and for the dedication and performance that led to their selection. 

This was the 17th year the Rotary Club has recognized outstanding first responders in Ansonia. 

The event was supported by the Valley Community Foundation, the Liberty Bank Foundation, and donations from the community. 

The event chairman was Cheryl Biros of the Ned Miller Agency/Starkweather-Shepley Insurance Co.

Ansonia Rotary to host recognition dinner for first responders

ANSONIA - The city's fire, police, and ARMS departments will be recognized at the Ansonia Rotary Club’s Annual Civic Service Awards Ceremony and dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 17. 

The event will be held at Ansonia High School, 20 Pulaski Highway. 

A member of each department will receive an Outstanding Member/Officer of the Year award.  
Awardees chosen by their respective departments will be announced at the dinner. 

This is the 17th year that the Rotary Club has recognized the outstanding public service to the city by its first responders. 

The public is invited. Call 203-888-1101 for reservations. 
A dinner donation of $10 is requested.  
Event sponsors include the Valley Community Foundation and the Liberty Bank Foundation.

ANSONIA - Members of the Ansonia Rotary Club joined in Liberty Bank's recent Thanksgiving Holiday Challenge and collected $100 for the Kathleen Samela Food Bank at Christ Episcopal Church.  

The check was presented to Food Bank Director Meme Yocher at the Club's weekly luncheon.  

The Ansonia Rotary Club meets at 12:15 p.m. Tuesdays at Crave Restaurant on Main Street. Guests and new members are welcome to attend.

Ansonia Rotary Club recognizes first responders

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Rotary Club recently presented three of Ansonia’s first responders with Outstanding Service Awards. 

The annual dinner ceremony was held at Ansonia High School.  

Mayor David S. Cassetti was on hand to congratulate the awardees, and he joined family, friends, and Rotarians in expressing thanks to the men and women of Ansonia’s emergency services.

EMT Kate Topazio was chosen by colleagues at Ansonia Rescue Medical Services to receive the 2016 Rotary Civic Service Recognition Award. 

She joined ARMS in 2010 after receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Fairfield University.  A Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Topazio was awarded the Mary Schumacher Leadership Award and the Florence Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing in 2014. 

She averages 80-plus hours a week occasionally in her dual capacities, and her medical training has been a significant asset at ARMS. 

In one case she recognized a patient going into cardiac arrest and intervened. She is a Field Training Officer and often goes beyond the call of duty, recently joining the EMS Bike Team.

Sgt. Alex Barreira of the Ansonia Police Department was selected as the outstanding police officer for 2016. He joined APD in 2004 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2014. Barreira has served with distinction during his 10 years. In charge of the K-9 and FTEP programs, he was assigned to a local DEA task force for two years. 

His other awards include the 2016 U.S. Attorney Award in recognition of his efforts in Operation Fast Lane II, and the departmental Lifesaving Award for resuscitating an unresponsive victim. He is considered a role model and leader by his peers and supervisors.

Second Lt. Matthew Casini of Webster Hose Company received the Ansonia Fire Department Outstanding Service Award.  

Casini joined AFD in 2002 and was promoted to his current rank this year. He currently holds five certifications in fire and medical roles, and acts as the company’s training officer. A graduate of Emmett O’Brien Technical High School, Casini is employed by Sikorsky Aircraft.
