State Bond Commission to consider funding renovation of Century Plaza in Derby

Valley lawmakers hail inclusion of project on agenda

HARTFORD - State Representatives Kara Rochelle, D-Ansonia/Derby, Mary Welander, D- Orange, Woodbridge, Derby, Nicole Klarides-Ditria R-Beacon Falls, Derby, Seymour, and state Senator Jorge Cabrera, D-Hamden, applaud the inclusion of $200,000 on the Connecticut State Bond Commission's Dec. 21 meeting agenda to replace an elevator and windows at Century Plaza, 30 Elizabeth St., Derby. 

Century Plaza is TEAM, Inc.'s headquarters and houses several other nonprofit organizations for the Naugatuck Valley and surrounding region.

"These funds, if approved, will help to ensure that thousands of residents in our community can more easily access a building that provides vital support and services to the children, families, and seniors of our community. I am proud to advance this project and am grateful to Sen. Cabrera, and Representatives Welander and Klarides-Ditria for being strong partners in this effort that will have a lasting impact," Rochelle said. "I want to thank the governor and members of the State Bond Commission for including this project on the commission's next meeting agenda. This important project will help enhance the building's safety, ensuring residents can access the nonprofits that touch so many lives in our community."

Klarides-Ditria said, “Smart, long term investments like these that increase accessibility while also improving physical infrastructure will bring substantial dividends back to our community through a safer, more welcoming environment for all of our citizens. I’m pleased these funds are being used to bolster such a wonderful community resource and I want to thank my colleagues on the delegation for working tirelessly to get this money on the Commission’s agenda."

Klarides-Ditria: Operation Fuel funds several assistance programs

Operation Fuel is the country’s oldest fuel fund, and is focused on providing year-round emergency energy assistance to every city and town in Connecticut. 

They are the primary source of energy and utilities assistance for low- to moderate-income households who are struggling financially and have exhausted other options.

Operation Fuel fills the gap for our state’s most vulnerable residents – children, senior citizens, working families, and people with chronic medical conditions.

Operation Fuel offers programs for individuals and families, including:
Direct bill payments up to $700 for all energy sources: electric, gas utilities, deliverable fuels, oil, propane, kerosene, pellets and wood;
Direct bill payments of $250 for water utility in Aquarion and CT Water, up to $500 in MDC territories; and
Grants for repair/replacement up to $5,000 for energy efficient furnace, boiler, and water heaters.

For the past 43 years, Operation Fuel has provided $2.48 million in emergency energy assistance to more than 5,464 Connecticut households, serving 18,725 children, adults and families!

TEAM awarded $92.7K for 2 Meals on Wheels delivery trucks

DERBY - TEAM, Inc.'s Meals on Wheels program recently received a boost when the organization was awarded $92,700 to purchase two new delivery trucks.

Valley United Way youth group funds activities for families in Umbrella program

Center for Domestic Violence Services awarded $800 

ANSONIA - The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services received a grant of $800 from Valley United Way’s Youth Leadership Program. 

The funds will be used for recreational and educational activities for the children residing in the organization's safe house.

The children will enjoy activities and experiences outside the safe house to build positive family memories. The activities with their mothers will help to alleviate the fears and anxiety associated with their experience with domestic violence and the uprooting of their lives, and will provide the children with a sense of normalcy and security. 

Since 1990, Valley United Way Youth Leadership members have distributed small, venture grants to community organizations in the Valley area.  These grants are aimed at helping to fund new and/or expanding programs that serve the needs of Valley Youth.

BHcare’s The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services is dedicated to increasing awareness of domestic violence and its effect on the community, empowering those victimized by providing advocacy and safe and effective services, and to working for social change to eliminate domestic violence.  

Each year UCDVS provides free and confidential services for more than 6,000 victims and their children.
