Learn local history, watch a movie, more at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., has scheduled the following events in June.

Local history
The Library presents The Valley in the 1890s, a powerpoint show researched and narrated by Patricia Sweeney, Ph.D., at 6:30 p.m. June 4.  
The program highlights Valley industry, various downtown streetscapes, women’s fashion, leisure activities, the life of young Frances Osborne, and the building of Derby Neck Library, and more.

Dinner and a Movie
At 5:30 p.m. June 7 the Library hosts Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older.  
This month’s feature film is The Outlaw Josey Wales starring Clint Eastwood.

The library serves free movie refreshments, including a pizza dinner at intermission.  

Edible flowers
The Library hosts “Edible Flowers with Mary Newman,” speaking on the uses of flowers in the culinary world at 6:30 p.m. June 14.  
Newman is the co-author of “Edible Flowers: A Global History."  

Women's Forum 
The Library hosts Women’s Forum, a literary and related Valley history topics discussion group at 12:30 p.m. June 18.  This month’s session features Patricia Sweeney’s powerpoint on “The Valley in the 1890s.” 
Feel free to bring a light lunch; we serve coffee and tea.  

Evening Book Club
At 6:30 p.m. June 25 the Library hosts the Evening Book Club. This month’s selection is “Mom & Me & Mom” by Maya Angelou.  
Copies of the book are available at the library.  The focus is on novella and memoirs by award-winning authors.
