Seymour Public Library book club to discuss 'Madame Bovary'



SEYMOUR - Seymour Public Library Evening Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 29 in the lower level auditorium. Mingle starts at 6 p.m.

"Madame Bovary" by Gustave Flaubert will be discussed.
Summary: Emma Bovary, a doctor's wife, dreams of a life beyond the routine daily life of her small town. She craves the excitement of grand romances found in the novels she reads. Emma embarks on a series of passionate love affairs as her unhappiness grows, seeking to fill the void inside her heart. However, Emma’s rash decisions create a ripple effect on the lives of everyone around her.

DERBY - Meeting on the last Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library, the Evening Book Club is a monthly program where we primarily read shorter novels by award-winning authors and occasionally a memoir. 

This month's selection is "Ethan Frome" by Edith Wharton.

Derby Neck Library hosts monthly Evening Book Club via Zoom



DERBY - The Evening Book Club at Derby Neck Library has been re-instituted at the traditional time, the last Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. 
The club next meets at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 via Zoom to enjoy good company and discuss the chosen book. 
The books selected are novellas available on Project Gutenberg. 
They can be downloaded on paper for free, put on a kindle, or read from the computer screen. 
Pat Sweeney continues as moderator. 
If you have not given the library your e-mail address, now is the time to do so. 
This allows you to get notices of the Zoom events offered for adults.
January selection: The Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum
February selection: TBA

Derby Neck Library to host calligraphy workshop, dinner and movie, more












DERBY - Calligrapher Debby Reelitz returns to Derby Neck Library from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 6) to lead a free workshop. 
Reelitz will guide attendees through the process of creating a “Versal Letter.”  
This can be your own initial, or that of a loved one. All supplies are provided.  
Your completed project can be framed and would make a lovely holiday gift.  
Registration is required; seating is limited.

Dinner and a Movie
The Library hosts “Dinner and a Movie” for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7.  
This month’s feature film is “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” a dramatic comedy.  
Free refreshments will be served, including a pizza dinner at intermission.  


'Learn Quiet Sitting'
From 6-8 p.m. Nov. 13 the Library presents a free workshop, “Learn Quiet Sitting.” 
Annette Szczesiul, a Derby native, social worker, and WPKN radio personality, leads attendees through relaxation methods using soft music and calming readings. 
The benefits from this exercise are many -enhanced creativity, emotional well-being, and a respite from holiday stresses.  
No registration is required.

Women's Forum
The Library hosts Women’s Forum, a literary and history-minded discussion group ,at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 18.  
This month the focus is on two short stories by an award-winning author recently in the news -Margaret Atwood. Free copies of the stories are available at the library.  
Feel free to bring a light lunch. Coffee and tea served.  


Evening Book Club
On Nov. 25 at 6:30 p.m. the Library hosts the Evening Book Club.  
This month’s selection is a mystery -“A Study in Scarlet” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  
Join us for a stimulating and informative discussion of this classic book.

Derby Neck Library to present movie, talk on USS Connecticut, more


Dinner and a Movie
DERBY - Derby Neck Library hosts Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 5).
This month’s feature film is “Rocketman,” a musical biography of Elton John. 
Free refreshments will be served, including a pizza dinner at intermission. 

Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. Sept. 16 the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a literary discussion group.  This month’s focus is a set of short stories by Jessamyn West. 
Copies of the stories are available at the library. Feel free to bring a light lunch; we serve coffee and tea.  

USS Connecticut presentation
The Library presents a powerpoint presentation on “The USS Connecticut” by Prof. Mark Albertson from Norwalk Community College at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19.  
Learn the details of how the lead ship navigated the globe with the Great White Fleet of 1907. No registration is required.  

Parenting workshop
At 6 p.m. Sept. 25 the Library will host Laura Cleary, LMSW in a Better Parenting Workshop, designed to improve your communication and motivational skills - for all parents, with a special focus on teens and tweens. 
This is a free event, but registration is recommended. 

Evening Book Club
At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 30 the Library hosts the Evening Book Club, moderated by Patricia Sweeney, Ph.D.  
This month’s selection is “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin. Copies of the book are available at the library.
