Griffin Hospital in Derby offers smoking cessation program


DERBY - Griffin Health offers education, advice, and support to help individuals prepare to quit tobacco and nicotine with an upcoming session of its free cessation program.

“That’s It! Learn to Quit!” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit tobacco and nicotine over the course of six weekly meetings. 


There will be a session Tuesdays Oct. 28, and Nov. 4, 11, and 25, and Dec. 2 and 9 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

The program encourages participants to acknowledge and honor past successes in their goal to quit tobacco. 


The goal is to help individuals learn how to stop using tobacco and nicotine without the guilt, shame, and fear of failure by teaching several different methods of quitting and managing nicotine withdrawal. 

Through group discussion and interactive activities, participants learn how to develop a quit plan that addresses their personal behaviors and habits. 

Strategies to manage nicotine withdrawal, behaviors, triggers, and urges are discussed as well as weight control and stress management.

Participants must be prepared to attend all six sessions.

DERBY - Griffin Health offers education, advice, and support to help individuals prepare to quit smoking with an upcoming session of its free tobacco and nicotine cessation program.


“That’s It – Learn to Quit” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit smoking over the course of six weekly meetings. 

There will be a session on Mondays March 17, 24, and 31, and April 7, 14, and 21 at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.


The program encourages participants to acknowledge and honor past successes in their goal to quit tobacco. There will be sessions at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital on Mondays Jan. 13, 20, and 27, and Feb. 3, 10, and 17 from 5:30-7 p.m., and on Mondays Jan. 20 and 27, and Feb. 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 2-3:30 p.m.

There will be a session held Tuesdays July 16-Aug. 20 from 10-11:30 a.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave. and another session set for Wednesdays July 17-Aug. 21 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

Eating Smart, Being Active: Weight Loss Toolkit (FREE)
Eating Smart, Being Active © Weight Loss Toolkit is an evidence-based healthy eating and active living curriculum for adults. Curriculum content is based on the latest research findings from the American Dietary Guidelines and was written by educators at Colorado State University. The lesson content emphasizes tools for sustained weight loss, such as creating individualized meal plans and viewing weight loss exercises. The program is designed to ensure participants learn what it means to lead a healthy life, including concepts like physical activity, food preparation, cooking & shopping skill development, and food safety. Nutrition education for chronic disease management is integrated into every class.

Heart Health Workshop FREE 3 Class Course
Heart Health Workshop (FREE) Heart Health is a 3-week workshop that provides information on heart disease with an emphasis on the management of hypertension and elevated cholesterol. American Heart Association curriculum covers nutrition, exercise, body composition, and stress reduction education. Class meets once a week for 90 minutes. Weekly speakers include a Griffin registered nurse, exercise physiologist, nutritionist and certified diabetes care and education specialist.

That’s it—Learn to Quit – Smoking Cessation (FREE)
That’s It—Learn to Quit is a 4-week behavioral change program designed to help any tobacco/nicotine user, including those who may be unsure about wanting to quit, to specifically address ambivalence about quitting. Participants will learn techniques and obtain resources on how to stop smoking. Facilitators assist participants in creating a quit plan and provide the necessary tools in managing smoking triggers. Educational materials, small group sessions and a supportive environment provides a welcoming space to learn the skills to help you quit smoking. Find comfort in coming together with like-minded individuals enduring their own attempts to quit; satisfaction ratings are over 98%. All ex-smokers also welcome if looking for support to stay quit.

Griffin Health is helping individuals looking to quit smoking in 2023 with its free smoking cessation program starting Jan. 18 in Shelton.

“That’s It – Learn to Quit” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit smoking over the course of four weekly sessions. 
The program consists of Wednesday meetings at 6 p.m. from Jan. 18-Feb. 8 at the Griffin Health Family Health Center, 110 Commerce Drive, Shelton.

Griffin Health to host virtual open house for smoking cessation program

Virtual open house slated for smoking cessation program

OXFORD - In recognition of the Great American Smokeout, Griffin Health will host a virtual open house for its free smoking cessation program Nov. 17 from noon-1 p.m.

Participants will learn about “That’s It – Learn to Quit,” Griffin’s four-week smoking cessation program that offers free education, advice and support to help individuals prepare to quit smoking. 
Through group discussion and interactive activities, participants learn how to develop a quit plan that addresses their personal behaviors and habits. Strategies to manage nicotine withdrawal, behaviors, triggers, and urges are discussed as well as weight control and stress management.

To register for the open house, call 203-732-1369. The next session of "That’s It – Learn to Quit" is set for Mondays, Nov. 21 and 28, and Dec. 5 and 12 at 4:30 p.m. at The Griffin Center for Healthy Living, Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road.

Nov. 17, 2022 is the Great American Smokeout. This annual observance is organized by the American Cancer Society on the third Thursday of November to encourage smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. 
The Great American Smokeout is an opportunity for people who smoke to commit to healthy, smoke-free lives - not just for a day, but year round.

“No matter your age or how long you’ve been smoking, quitting improves health, both immediately and over the long term,” said Griffin Health Services Wellness Facilitator Carolyn Gundell. “Giving up smoking is a journey, and it can be hard, but you can increase your chances of success with a good plan and support, which you can find by joining That’s It! Learn to Quit.”

Talk on smoking cessation methods slated at Griffin Hospital in Derby


DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host a free talk on methods for quitting smoking April 2 at 6 p.m. at the hospital.
Richard Le Pera, Smoking Cessation Specialist and Exercise Physiologist, will host “That’s It – Learn to Quit,” an open discussion about the health risks of smoking and several methods that have helped individuals kick the habit. 

The talk will include information about Griffin’s free smoking cessation program, which combines group discussion and interactive activities to teach participants how to develop a quit plan that addresses their personal behaviors and habits, including strategies to manage nicotine withdrawal, behaviors, triggers, and urges as well as weight control and stress management.

This talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U program, a series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics. 
Light refreshments will be served. The hospital is at 130 Division St.

“That’s It - Learn to Quit” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit smoking. 
The program consists of Wednesday night meetings from 5:30-7 p.m. scheduled for March 27, and April 3, 10, and 17 at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.
There is also a “reunion” for graduates of the program at 5:30 p.m. April 24 in the Center.
