Derby Neck Library to host 'Frankentoys for Teens' fun Saturday

DERBY - This teen programming series [at Derby Neck Library] is all about bad movies, bad art, and bad taste! 

Teens are invited to join us from 3-4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Community Room to create new life from old toys!
Participants will be provided supplies, sewing kits, duct tape, hot glue, toys to take apart and popcorn!

Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby to exhibit art made of repurposed trash

DERBY - Artist Sarah Schneiderman repurposes plastic trash and debris to create artwork that addresses social, political, and environmental issues.  

Her work will be displayed in the Kellogg Environmental Center throughout the month of January.  

There will be a reception with both an in-person and a virtual option from 2-4 p.m. Jan. 8 where Sarah will discuss her work and creative process.  Registration information is below.  

Please specify whether you will be attending the in-person or virtual reception.

Sarah’s work has been on exhibit around the country, from Seattle, Washington to Clarkston, Ga. and from Santa Monica, Calif. to Damariscotta, Maine.  

She continues to use trash as her medium while exploring non-toxic and non-plastic adhesives.  Her concern for the environment has expanded beyond art to lifestyle choices, including eating a vegan diet, using refillable containers, and repurposing household materials.  Sarah calls Glastonbury and Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean, home.

Instructor Jeannie Roslonowski will show participants how to create fun crafts using a variety of repurposed items.

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled another Recycle, Repurpose, and Reuse Craft at 6:30 p.m. July 11.

Ansonia Animal Control Officer, Jeanie Roslonowski, returns to the Library to show participants ages 18 and over, how to make decorative gift containers using mason jars.  
All materials will be provided but participants are asked to bring craft glue and scissors.  
The class will also include information on conservation and animal issues.

Workshop at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby to teach reusing plastic bags

DERBY - The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection today announced a hands-on workshop using plarn, a plastic yarn made from cutting up plastic bags. 
The workshop, led by Eileen Selling and Linda Joyce, will be held from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 15 at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave. 
Selling and Joyce lead needlecraft workshops and classes for the Derby Neck Library Needlers and Derby Senior Center.  
Based on skill levels, the presenters will lead both experienced and beginner participants in making either a plastic mat, a coaster or a bag. 
Participants will learn proper cutting techniques to make plarn for this activity.  
All ages are invited to take part in this workshop designed to help reduce waste by recycling resources into useful items. 
Participants will enjoy an afternoon learning a new skill or expanding on existing abilities with new materials. The workshop is offered free of charge (donations accepted) - please bring plastic bags to practice making plarn and a size K crochet hook or a pair of size 10 knitting needles. There will be needles and hooks available if you do not have your own sets. Registration is required to make sure there are enough supplies on hand.
