Spivak named Physician of the Year at Griffin Hospital in Derby

DERBY - Griffin Hospital Pulmonary Care Physician Roman Spivak, MD, FCCP, of Shelton, was recently honored as Physician of the Year at Griffin Hospital’s 31st Annual Nurses Week luncheon.

The Physician of the Year Award is based on voting by the hospital’s nursing staff. 

In nominating Spivak, nurses admired and appreciated his ability to gain the trust of patients and their families with his caring and compassionate bedside manner. He is considered a great role model for the hospital’s resident physicians, especially in the intricacies of critical care, and nurses highlighted how Spivak gained their respect by actively including them in patient rounding and in discussions about patient care plans.

“He gets to know each patient’s story and treats everyone like family,” Vice President of Patient Care Barbara Stumpo said during the celebration. “He is a voice of reason for families and patients when they are in end-of-life situations and always lends a kind and empathetic ear.”

Griffin Hospital physician receives Planetree Clinician Champion Award

DERBY - Neil Pearson, MD, of Southbury, was recently honored with the Planetree Clinician Champion Award.

The Clinician Champion Award is part of Planetree’s Annual Spirit of Planetree Awards, which recognize individuals around the world who personalize, humanize, and demystify the health care experience.
Pearson is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Vascular Medicine. He is President of the Griffin Hospital Medical Staff and is highly respected by his colleagues, hospital staff, and patients. 

The award especially recognizes Pearson’s involvement in Griffin’s Congestive Heart Failure Collaborative, which established standard CHF care protocols to reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions and improve the quality of life for patients.
“The Spirit of Planetree Award Ceremony is always a highlight of our Annual Conference,” said Planetree President Dr. Susan Frampton. 
“At the heart of the Planetree patient-centered model are the human interactions between patients and caregivers. Griffin Hospital in Derby honors surgeon as Physician of the Year

DERBY - Orthopedic surgeon Jeffrey Klauser, M.D., of Shelton, was recently honored as Physician of the Year at Griffin Hospital’s 30th Annual Nurses Week luncheon.

The Physician of the Year Award is based on voting by the hospital’s nursing staff. 
In nominating Klauser, Griffin nurses admired and appreciated his genuinely kind and caring approach to patients and hospital staff, his excellent judgement and skill, and how he always does the right thing for his patients, including taking the time to answer questions and concerns.

“Dr. Klauser is thorough, attentive, and professional at all times, and is a true team player who makes himself available to his patients and the staff,” said Dr. Frederick Browne, vice president of Medical Affairs, in presenting the award. 
“I personally feel this is a spotlight on an already integral surgical service at the hospital and Dr. Klauser represents one of many excellent orthopedic surgeons we have here.”

Klauser is a member of Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists and specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee, and hip.

Griffin physician to host open house in Shelton

Free health screenings will be offered
SHELTON - Griffin Faculty Physicians invites residents of Shelton and the surrounding communities to meet its new primary care physician, Dr. Elizabeth Arbia, DO, and tour her new office at 2 Ivy Brook Road, Suite 115, from 5–8 p.m. Dec. 9.

Dr. Arbia focuses on providing comprehensive care, preventative health education and treating patients as partners. 


She received her degree in osteopathic medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed a residency in family medicine at Duke University Medical Center where she served as chief resident. 

Throughout her medical career, Dr. Arbia has been committed to sharing her knowledge about preventative health with the community and her expertise in public health with her fellow physicians.

The open house will feature free health screenings and consultations, information on Griffin Hospital’s services, and demonstrations of Griffin’s complementary therapies, including massage. 

Refreshments will be served and the first 100 attendees will receive a gift.
