Celebrate Shelton to host handmade market Oct. 2

SHELTON - Celebrate Shelton will host the only Sunday handmade market on Oct. 2 to coincide with the annual Shelton Day festival. 

Hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Conti Building, 415 Howe Ave.

Elle Sera will perform from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Entertainment  for 1:30-4 p.m. to be announced.

Celebrate Shelton to host handmade market Saturday

SHELTON - Celebrate Shelton creators Nicole Heriot-Mikula, Michael Skrtic, and Jimmy Tickey are looking forward to the June Downtown Handmade Market, sponsored by SolarCity.

“Our goal is to ignite a greater sense of community while bringing a positive presence to downtown Shelton," Heriot-Mikula said.

Tickey added, "The Monthly Downtown Handmade markets have become a destination for small businesses, artisan vendors, eateries, and culture as residents from Shelton join to shop local." 
Skrtic said, “We want to encourage our families, friends, and neighbors to shop locally and support our local businesses."

Just in time for Father’s Day, Saturday's market will feature live music and 20 handmade vendors - from teas to seasonal spices; from men’s soaps and lotions to home goods. The Downtown Handmade Market is free to enter with ample free parking. 
This will be the last Downtown Handmade Market until October.

The market will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 6 at 415 Howe Ave. It will feature live music and more than 20 handmade artisan vendors. 
There is free, ample parking and admission is free.

Guest column: Shelton handmade market offers gift ideas, live music, holiday spirit

So, How Was It?

SHELTON - For the second year in a row, Celebrate Shelton has held a Downtown Handmade Market in the Conti Building.

If you don't know this building, it's that large brick structure at 415 Howe Ave. that is one side of the big parking lot by the Farmer's Market building at Veteran's Memorial Park (a.k.a the slab, a.k.a the Riverwalk). 

The Downtown Handmade Market is held on the first Saturday of each month from February through November. As the holidays approach, they ramp it up and hold the market every Saturday. Somewhere around 40 vendors take over the hallways and corners of the building while hundreds of shoppers pass by and make their selections. 

It was either last month or the month before that I purchased some soap from one of the vendors, Lisa's Soaps Naked and Natural. Since then I have thrown out all of my store bought shower products and have added to my handmade soap collection. I can't believe how much better my skin feels and I feel better about what I am putting on my body. At this past weekend's market, I purchased a face wash bar and I can already tell a difference. 

There is usually live music provided by local musicians that float through the halls, making the shopping experience even more special. The mimosas don't hurt, either! 

It is so great to see the old historic building take on such a wonderful new life. Quite a few local businesses have taken up residence in the building, giving the community even more reasons to stop by and check it out. Written Words Bookstore, for example, has been in the building for a few months now and they have a variety of book clubs that are worth checking out. I have been a part of the business and leadership book club for about a year and really do enjoy it! (#shamelessplug) In the good weather, they even have a walking book club where they walk the greenway while discussing the book. 

I am so excited for the new coffee shop that is opening up right next door to the book store! 
I poked my head in during the market this past weekend and couldn't believe what a beautiful space it is going to be! 

The Glass Source (main level) is one of the best places to find a special gift if you have anyone in your life like I do. The glass ornaments are beautiful and unique. 

Bring the Hoopla is, of course, a very fun place to stop by. No one leaves there without a smile! Did you know that hula hooping for 10 minutes burns almost 100 calories? Since I got my hoop, I have added it to my routine and have really seen and felt a difference. And the hoops are gorgeous! 

The vendors are all so great. Each market offers something special. Looking for a unique present? They have you covered. Looking for a great new necklace to go with that new dress? There's a vendor for that. Looking for something that you don't know you need to have? You will absolutely find something. 

Do I recommend this market? Yes. Will I be there Saturday? Yes, probably around 2 after I get out of class.

SHELTON - Celebrate Shelton’s “First Saturdays” 
celebration of handmade artisans continues from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Conti Building, 415 Howe Ave.

Celebrate Shelton concert series was a hit

Organizer: 'Overflowing crowds' enjoyed music, family fun

Over the past several months, I have been working with Nicole Heriot-Mikula and Michael Skrtic on Celebrate Shelton's Downtown Sounds Summer Concert Series.

These free, family-friendly concerts held in July and August included live music, food trucks, and a beer garden, handmade artisan vendors and activities for children.

Each night had overflowing crowds as families arrived excited for live music and an enjoyable summer evening on the Veteran’s Memorial Riverwalk. 

Seeing families sing along with the music or children dance with their hula-hoops was what we had hoped for when we began planning these concerts months ago. 
I want to thank all those who attended our first summer concert series and celebrated Shelton with us!

It has been a pleasure to work with Nicole and Michael as they establish Celebrate Shelton. 
We have been able to create unique events which promote small businesses and shopping local here in Shelton thanks in part to the City of Shelton, Shelton Economic Development Corporation and the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce as well as our community sponsors.

In addition to the summer concert series, we coordinate a monthly Handmade Market, and a Community Holiday Tree-Lighting in Downtown Shelton. 
Our next event will be the September Handmade Market taking place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Conti Building, 415 Howe Ave.

I invite you to join us to experience our local handmade artisans and to see what small business owners are creating right here in Shelton!
