Shelton Police ask motorists to use caution around Howe Avenue road work

Shelton PD will be assisting with road work on Howe Avenue in the downtown corridor.

Please be aware of the posted No Parking/Tow Away Zone from 6 p.m.-6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday all summer. Vehicles parked in the restricted area may be towed.

Please use caution, watch for Police Officers and work crews. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Shelton Police caution drivers about icy road conditions tonight

Attention Shelton residents: Due to icy road conditions, please use extreme caution while traveling tonight. Reduce your speed, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

Shelton public safety crews are actively monitoring conditions. Stay safe and check on neighbors as needed!

Derby Police post temporary closing of Roosevelt Drive

 

From Derby Police at 8:51 a.m.:

Roosevelt Drive (Route 34) is temporarily closed from Lakeview Terrace to Buckingham Rd due to wires and trees across the road. 

Construction crews anticipate it will be closed for the next 4 hours. Use alternative routes and drive with caution.

Ansonia Police warn residents of power lines down after storms

ANSONIA - Due to the storms that passed through Ansonia earlier this evening there were widespread reports of trees down, debris in the roadway, and power lines down, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a release. 

If you see a line down please do not approach the line, call the department so we can notify UI of the location. 

The following roads are closed as result of the storm: Jewett Street in the area of Vine Street with power lines down; Arbor Terrace with trees and power lines down; Glen Drive with trees and power lines down; and Caroline Street with trees and power lines down.

The roads have been blocked off - please do not travel on them, we are working with UI to get service restored.

Ansonia mayor wishes all a Happy Thanksgiving, urges caution against COVID-19

MESSAGE FROM MAYOR CASSETTI

Good Evening Residents of the Great City of Ansonia!

This is Mayor David Cassetti, calling to wish you and your family a HAPPY THANKSGIVING, and to remind you about the very REAL DANGERS we are facing this holiday season.

For the sake of you and your loved ones, I urge residents to take extreme caution against the spread of COVID-19, especially when it comes to social gatherings of any kind this week.

Thanksgiving at my home will be much, much smaller this year. We are limiting attendance, while reaching out virtually to our extended family.

I know it may be frustrating – it certainly is for me -but I ask that you help protect our City by keeping attendance at your Thanksgiving dinner to those already in your household, and practicing social distancing and mask wearing in the presence of anyone who does not live with you. And of course, remember to keep washing your hands!

Also, please think twice about any out-of-state travel, especially if someone you live with is at increased risk for getting very sick from COVID-19, such as a senior citizen or those with known health issues. In many cases, a virtual gathering is simply the safest and most sensible alternative.

And if you absolutely must travel, I am counting on you to check all travel restrictions and follow all quarantine requirements and guidelines…including the 14-day quarantine or negative COVID test that will be required when you return to Ansonia from most states.

I don’t want to see you or your loved ones hurt by COVID-19. I don’t want to see this virus take another life in our community.

Please … let’s ensure a happy and healthy holiday by looking out for one another, and playing it SAFE. That might mean a smaller holiday than we are used to…but that just means we get to make up for it next year!

Connecticut State Police urge residents to use caution as new school year starts

      MIDDLETOWN - Connecticut State Troopers urge drivers, parents and children to prepare for back to school safety.

As more than half-a-million Connecticut children head back to school over the next few weeks, Connecticut State Troopers urge all parents and guardians to discuss school, traffic, and personal safety with their children.  

Troopers also caution all drivers to be aware of “back to school” bus, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.  

Drivers are urged to use extra caution as they travel on Connecticut’s roadways, and to be alert to children who may be hurrying to and from school.

Under state law, it is mandatory that drivers stop for school buses that have their flashing red warning lights activated, whether they are approaching or following the school bus. 

The yellow flashing lights are a warning to drivers that the bus will be stopping to pick up and/or drop-off students.  

Drivers should anticipate that the red flashing lights will come on shortly after seeing the yellow flashing lights as the bus comes to a stop.  

The red flashing lights on a school bus indicate that the bus is stopped and students are either getting on or off the bus. 

Failure to obey this law not only puts our children at great risk, but it carries a hefty penalty for drivers. Fines for passing a school bus that has its flashing red warning lights activated starts at $465 for a first offense. 

Parents should remind their children to wait in a safe place, out of the travel portion of the roadway, and only cross the street after looking both ways, even if the red lights are activated.  

Urge children to tell an adult and the police about anything that makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable on the way to/from school and while they’re in school. Children should be reminded not to speak to, or get into the vehicles of, people they don’t know.

All Resident State Troopers and Troopers on patrol will periodically monitor school bus stops to help ensure the safety of all students as they travel back to school to begin the 2016-2017 school year.
