Make wreaths, learn about squirrels, more at Ansonia Nature Center
ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, will offer a variety of fun and educational activities in October.
BITTERSWEET WREATHS – Oct. 5, 2 p.m.
Bring your own clippers and gardening gloves for this workshop led by Ranger Dawn.
When you collect these beautiful orange-berried vines, you’re actually helping the park by removing this invasive plant species. FEE: $6. Please call to register.
NATURE AS MENTOR – Oct. 13, 2 p.m.
Join Marlow Shami, a nature-based teacher, artist, healer, and writer, who will conduct the Nature As Mentor program for adults. Learn the magnificent language of nature in this powerful workshop. Discover your unique niche as part of our planet’s restoration plan.
The wisdom of elder/earth-based cultures, as well as recent empirical research in the fields of eco-psychology and environmental psychology, mindfulness-based stress reduction, meditation, and energy medicine, provide the foundation of this 90-minute program. Attendees acquire simple tools to access the guidance they seek and restoration needed for negotiating the challenges of daily life. Discover how to actively engage in caring for our shared home. Take a ride through our community gardens and fields in our horse-drawn story wagon, where you’ll hear some spooky Halloween tales! Learn about bats, spiders, and owls! Have some fresh apple cider and baked goods. Visit the Nature Shop to buy some creepy and crawly nature-related items. Enjoy nature-related exhibitors and vendors. You can try your hand at pumpkin painting, get your face painted, and make some original crafts. All proceeds will benefit the Nature Center’s exhibits.

Create wreaths, repurpose candles, more at Ansonia Nature Center
ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center has scheduled fun activities for October, including its annual Autumn Festival.
FAERIE HOUSES AND TEA PARTY - Oct. 6, 1-3 p.m. Join us at Pavilion 2 to build faerie houses out of natural materials, which we will provide, and enjoy a tea party with mini-cupcakes and herbal tea. Donations of baked goods to share are also cheerfully accepted.
FEE: $7 per person. For children 18 months to 5 years old; each child must be accompanied by an adult. Bring blankets or mats to sit on and dress appropriately for the weather.

For adults and children 11 and up. Please pre-register; class size is limited. MATERIALS FEE: $6 per person.

Learn cartooning, take a hike, more at Ansonia Nature Center
ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, has announced a variety of fun activities for June.
CONNECTICUT TRAILS DAY – June 3, 9 a.m.
Join Nature Center Director Alison Rubelmann and Ranger Dan Bosques for this morning walk.
Discover the beauty of the Nature Center’s typical New England woodland during the CT Forest and Park Association’s annual Trails Day weekend. We might get lucky and find a lady slipper or two.
This moderate hike will also visit the settlement of the Paugasucks. Bring water, a snack, and bug spray, and wear sturdy shoes. Suitable for older children and adults. FREE.
CARTOONING THE NATURAL WORLD – June 10 and 24, 10 a.m.
Ranger Amie Ziner, our artist in residence, will teach four classes in cartooning nature! We will use on site materials, stuffed specimens, and live animal observation to complete four cartoons with a plant and animal in each one.
Improve your drawing accuracy and realism for fun, for story illustration, and for expressing yourself using pictures—a picture is worth a thousand words! For ages 10 to adult. Limited space. FEE: $5 per class.

SUMMER SUN SPOTS – June 10, 1 p.m.
Join Bob Carruthers for a chance to view the sun safely. Serious eye damage or blindness can result from even a brief glimpse of our star. Never view it directly with the naked eye or with any unfiltered optical device, such as binoculars or a telescope. Bob will use a special instrument to observe the sun spots safely. He will project an image of the sun through a telescope onto a white screen. He will teach you what the sun is, what makes it shine, and what it’s made from. FREE.

Be captivated by Henry Lappen’s beautiful masks and by his dances among the crowd demonstrating the form and motion of the different species. The audience joins him while learning some mime skills and imaging. FEE: $5 per person.
EXPLORE REDWING POND – June 14, 1 p.m.
An introduction for our young naturalists and adults to learn about the inhabitants of Redwing Pond. We will scoop with ponding nets to capture and identify aquatic insects, fish, frogs, and turtles. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes—you will get muddy and wet. FREE.
FANCI ANNUAL MEETING AND POTLUCK SUPPER – June 14, 5:30 p.m. If you’re a member of FANCI and can’t make the regular meetings, now is the time to find out what we’ve been up to! Reports and the election of officers will take place. Bring your own table setting and a dish to share (12 servings), and your ideas and suggestions for next year’s activities. Please register by June 9.
FIELD TRIP: Meigs Point Nature Center, Three Shoreline Ecosystems – June 21, 10 a.m.–noon
Meet the Ansonia Nature Center staff at the Meigs Point Nature Center, Hammonasset Beach State Park.
We will explore three very distinct shoreline ecosystems with the Meigs Point staff – rocky shore, sandy beach, and salt marsh. We will learn what makes a species invasive and how animals adapt in order to survive in the intertidal zone at the rocky shore. Along the sandy beach we’ll identify shells and seaweed as well as drag a seine net to see what lives in Long Island Sound. In the salt marsh we’ll discover its age and why marshes are important to people and Long Island Sound.

Native American tribes traditionally kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. The name of this moon, given because strawberries are harvested in June, was universal to all Algonquin tribes. However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon. Wear appropriate footwear. For all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). FEE: $1.

Ansonia Nature Center slates fundraiser, soap-making class, drumming circle, hikes
ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, has announced its calendar of events for September.
YOGA AND FITNESS – Begins Sept. 1, 6:30 p.m.
Instructor Pamela Mellitz will lead students through stretching and toning, balance and awareness. She’ll also demonstrate the importance of just breathing correctly for better physical and mental health in these full 90-minute sessions.

NATURE’S CHILD: Incredible Insects – Sept. 2, 10 a.m.
Join naturalist Amie to discover the critters who live in our park’s beautiful yellow flowers. You’ll be amazed to find how many tiny creatures live on our goldenrod.

FUNDRAISER: Club Comedy Night – Sept. 2, 7 p.m.
This fundraising event, hosted by the Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center, Inc., to support the building of a new playground, will be held at Club Comedy, 585 South Main St., Naugatuck. The club is located ½ mile off exit 25 or 26 on Route 8.

FALL TERM JUNIOR RANGERS – Registration begins Thursday, Sept. 8; class runs Thursdays, Sept. 15–Nov. 3, 3:30–5 pm.
Calling all kids 11 to 14 years old who love nature! Has your child wanted to work with animals, garden, help maintain our trails, and help with special events? This is the opportunity to help the Nature Center in our 8-week after-school program. Parental permission is required. Class size is limited; this class fills up fast! FREE.
BACK TO BASICS: Soap Making 101 – Sept. 10, 1 p.m.
This two-hour class will provide the basic skills you’ll need to make wonderful soaps! Attendees will learn basic safety and traditional techniques required for this time-honored craft which makes great gifts – or soaps to keep for your own use. Soap samples and recipes will be provided. Bring a small container for your take-home samples.

PET LOSS GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP – Sept. 11, 1 p.m.
Losing a beloved animal can be tragic and a very emotional time for humans. There are numerous resources to turn to for the loss of a human loved one; however, there are limited options for when we lose an animal. Susan Wilson has created this support group for those who have lost an animal or have one in the process of moving on.

FULL HARVEST MOON HIKE – Sept. 16, 7 p.m.
The northeastern native people referred to the full September moon as the “corn is edible” moon. Join our rangers to hike the Nature Center trails as the big moon rises. Enjoy some marshmallows over the campfire to conclude our program.

Ansonia Nature Center plans playground fundraiser at Earth Day celebration
This was the scene Tuesday morning as the quarter-century old playground was being razed.
ANSONIA - After the wooden playscape at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center was demolished Tuesday a GoFundMe site was set up by a local resident (https://www.gofundme.com/y6zttytg).
It has already received some donations, “but there is still a big funding gap,” said Alison Rubelmann, the Center’s Director.
“We’d like to put in a beautiful, ADA-compliant, safe playground that has cool features, like slides and a giant hollow log, but the cost is currently out of our reach at $200,000.”
The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center is owned by the city, but the classes offered, and the animals and their care, are supplemented by the Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
FANCI welcomes donations earmarked for a new playground; they may be mailed to FANCI, 10 Deerfield Lane, Ansonia, 06401.
“There is no one single funding source for the new playground,” said Rubelmann. "We have anticipated needing to raise funds, and have applications currently with different funding agencies for part of the funds. However, these are not guaranteed to be awarded, and, they will not be enough to build a new playground without lots of community donations.”
The Center’s annual Earth Day Festival on April 30 will be a major fundraiser for the new playground, with bake sales, vendors, food trucks, free activities and hikes, and live music from Rattlin’ Windows.
Community members are invited to attend and support the playground fund.
