Hope Lives donates $8,500 to Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin

DERBY - The 22^nd Annual Hope Lives event raised $8,500 for breast cancer screening services at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital.

Hope Lives is a non-profit organization associated with Horizon of Hope, a national campaign by Longaberger Baskets to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research and local breast cancer services.

Maria Ammar, a Longaberger Stylist Consultant for more than 25 years, has organized the luncheon fundraiser as part of the campaign, raising over $138,000 for the Center.

“Hope Lives is devoted to making a difference in the Valley for breast health, and early detection is the key,” Ammar said.

Hope Lives has been raising funds for the Center for more than two decades, and the Horizon of Hope program has raised over $20 million for breast health, education, awareness. The donation will be used to help local women pay for breast cancer screening services.

The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital opened in 2011 and primarily serves the Lower Naugatuck Valley and surrounding communities. 

It combines state-of-the-art technology, a team of highly trained physicians and staff, and a Planetree healing environment to offer patients a comprehensive range of personalized breast care and wellness services.  

The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness features two new, state-of-the-art digital mammography suites with 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) capability, a breast ultrasound suite, and the most advanced system available to perform stereotactic biopsy. 

The Center also utilizes a rapid diagnostic model where patients are often given test results the same day imaging tests are performed, and if indicated, follow up testing (ultrasound, breast biopsy) and even consultation with a breast surgeon are often available the same day if the patient’s schedule permits.

13th annual Birchwood Mad Dash in Ansonia to benefit American Cancer Society

 

Griffin Hospital in Derby to offer facial skin screenings, raise awareness

DERBY - Griffin Hospital is raising skin cancer awareness and helping individuals protect themselves and their loved ones with free facial skin screenings Dec. 13 at The Center for Cancer Care, 350 Seymour Ave. 

Appointments are available between 3-5 p.m. and reservations are required by calling The Center for Cancer Care at 203-732-1260.

Facial skin screenings will be conducted by a registered nurse from Griffin’s Community Outreach to show sun damage and detect abnormalities that could be a sign of potential skin cancer. 

Oncology Nurse Navigator Melissa Gramigna, RN, BSN, will assist with referrals to a dermatologist if needed.

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, account for approximately 100,000 cases of skin cancer and more nearly 8,000 cancer deaths annually.

Risk factors for non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers include: 

• Unprotected and/or excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (sunlight or tanning booths)
• Pale skin (easily sunburned, doesn’t tan much or at all, natural red or blond hair)
• Occupational exposures to coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic compounds, or radium
• You or other members of your family have had skin cancers
• Multiple or unusual moles
• Severe sunburns in the past

Skin cancer can be found and treated early by looking for these symptoms:

• Any change on your skin, especially in the size or color of a mole, growth, or spot, or a new growth (even if it has no color)
• Scaliness, oozing, bleeding, or a change in the way a bump or nodule looks
• The spread of pigmentation (color) beyond its border, such as dark coloring that spreads past the edge of a mole or mark 
• A change in sensation, such as itchiness, tenderness, or pain

Some symptoms are not as noticeable, so skin cancer screenings are advised. 

If you have any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately or visit griffinhealth.org to find a local dermatologist.

SHELTON - The American Cancer Society is calling on all Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton residents to participate in the annual Relay For Life of the Naugatuck Valley June 1-2, from 2 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday at the Riverwalk, 118 Canal St. 

The Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer.
Uniting communities across the globe, the event celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and takes action by raising funds for cancer research, as well as programs and services for cancer patients.

This event is open to all and is family-friendly. Teams and participants are invited to sign up any time leading up to the event. 

Relay For Life brings the community together, embracing their collective power to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. 

“Every passionate step taken demonstrates courage and strength,” says Grace Scinto, Senior Community Development Manager. “Together, we are bigger than cancer, and funds raised by local teams help the American Cancer Society bring cancer to its knees.”

There will be food trucks, live music, entertainment, a children's area, craft and food vendors, and much more.

There also will be a canned goods collection for Valley food banks.

All proceeds from the day will be given directly to the American Cancer Society to continue the FIGHT against cancer.
There will a midnight movie; bring your lawn chairs and enjoy.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at BAD SONS Beer Co., 251 Roosevelt Drive. 

The Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. 
Uniting communities across the globe, the event celebrates people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change.

Celebrating National Cancer Survivors Month at Relay for Life in Shelton

Below are several of my favorite survivors who celebrated June 2. 

We all belong to the 'Circle of Friends' breast cancer support group at Griffin Hospital in Derby. 
We posed after enjoying a Survivor Luncheon provided by Griffin Hospital at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life at the Shelton Riverwalk.

It was quite hot as survivors and caregivers walked laps in the direct sun around the field. 
I really don't know how all of the volunteers did all they had to do to keep the event running. They did a great job!

Recuperation journey: Survivors at Shelton Relay called Hope Heroes

SHELTON - Saturday was a day to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer and to celebrate survivors at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of the Naugatuck Valley.
The two-day event was held at the Shelton Riverwalk.

Survivors were treated to a lunch and given pins that say "Hope Hero." 
A big thank you goes to the committee members who have worked hard for the past year to organize the Relay for Life activities.

Garden of Hope grows at Shelton Riverwalk

Cancer survivors treated to a luncheon at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Saturday at Shelton Riverwalk were asked to write the names of those who supported us through our treatments and journey. 
We decorated the flowers to add to a Garden of Hope set up on the field at the annual event.
