'Turnback Tuesday' features well-known Native American basket maker

In honor of National Native American Heritage Month, Turnback Tuesday is taking a look at Molly Hatchett.
Born in 1738, a member of the Paugassetts Tribe, she was known for her basket making. It is said she lived north of the mouth of Two Mile Brook on what is also called Turkey Hill.
Molly was married to John Hatchett and they had four children. John died at a young age. Molly made her living by traveling the area and selling her baskets.
Molly passed in 1829. She is listed on The Electronic Valley / Derby CT Hall of Fame.

Derby Public Library is very fortunate to have in its collection one of her baskets.

Thanks goes to Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.
